H1Bs are being abused and I’m not defending them. But there are 2 other big issues (in my 30+ years in technology)

* The government makes it hard/expensive/unattractive to hire/employ/fire employees. Contractors (H1B or otherwise) are a better business decision in many cases.

* Too many employees think the business/project should revolve around them. The idea of giving 40 hours work for 40 hours pay a week seems to be dead. Many employees brag about “working” 50+ hour weeks. But, after 5+ hours lunch, another 5 in the break room, and 10 on the computer or personal calls they’ve barely worked 30. And too many new grads think their 4 years of education in “new technology” trumps my 30 years in a wide variety of technologies. It can be hard to convince them to do what is needed for the project (e.g. another few hours of our time wasted as I watch them fail in their plan then do what I told them).

p.s. I currently work for myself and will work 7:30-6 today. So I can say I’m giving my employer 40+ hours this week even though I’m posting here during work hours. :)

Noted (and approved).

Agreed - but the right answer is not to screw those American employees by allowing their displacement by low-salary indentured serfs.

The idea of giving 40 hours work for 40 hours pay a week seems to be dead.

I've heard the same about H-1Bs.
