H1Bs are being abused and I’m not defending them.

Noted (and approved).

The government makes it hard/expensive/unattractive to hire/employ/fire employees.

Agreed - but the right answer is not to screw those American employees by allowing their displacement by low-salary indentured serfs.

The idea of giving 40 hours work for 40 hours pay a week seems to be dead.

I've heard the same about H-1Bs.

I've heard the same about H-1Bs.


All the H-1Bs I've worked with were through a big consulting company and they've all been productive 40+ hours a week (as long as they have specific details on what to do). If they don't they'll be replaced.

The times I've seen problems is when the team lead/manager doesn't know how to manage them - give them enough work and details. Some projects (ones without good requirements) do not lend themselves to that and need more interaction with the business and independent thought the whole time and H-1B (or offshore) are bad options.

That's just my experience and may be off in other types of businesses (I'm mostly IT for non-IT companies).
