Lots of work today, a short message...

Ube (pronounced OO-bay) is very near the southern tip of Honshu. In today's article on the Ube bombing the description is quite specific, more so than usual: they bombed a synthetic fuels plant on reclaimed land near the Kuto river in NW Ube. If you look on Google Maps there are a few strips of land near the river that jut out from the main beach. The one that looks like an X-acto knife is covered with oil storage tanks, along with the mini-peninsula right to its east. However, the largest tanks are on the other side of the river, at the Nichias oil plant.

Superforts flying over this river entrance would think they were at a turkey shoot, with all the storage tanks and facilities available; the hard part would be co-ordinating which planes dropped bombs on which portions of the industrialized section of the town.

Page 5, paraphrased: Irish protest beer price increase by threatening to quit drinking.

Is that a hollow threat or what?

Re: Newsweek writer Harold Isaacs barred from China by Chiang’s government.

Isaacs was a Communist/Trotsky-ist, which made him popular at Newsweek and later a professor at MIT.
