Donald Trump's boisterous personality is fueling his campaign, but the billionaire businessman insists there is also a more dignified side to him.
In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper on Wednesday, Trump who created one of the most memorable moments of the 2016 campaign so far by sharing rival Lindsey Graham's cell phone number on national television suggested that he would shift his rhetoric as president.
"As president, you would change your tone?" Cooper asked.
"Oh, I'd think so," Trump said. "I'll change my tone."
Trump defended his recent attacks on his fellow candidates, saying he has been hitting back because he was first provoked.
"I didn't start it with Lindsey Graham. I couldn't care less about Lindsey Graham. He's registered at I think zero in the polls," Trump said. "Lindsey Graham called me a jackass. So am I supposed to say, 'Oh, it's OK'? I'm called a jackass. You have to fight back."

Nah, there’s plenty of time. Trump will need different drums to beat.....but if he’s gonna keep pulling this “new tone” and “compassionate” conservative thing, he’s gonna drive people away.
Your contempt is of no interest to anyone. Stopping the invasion will put him in the Whitehouse. The other candidates should have listened.
There is widespread contempt for single issue voters.....from almost everyone who is NOT a single issue voter...and you're delusional if you think Trump can ride this current fever all the way to the White House. He needs to take this fervor to other issues...and besides, don't embarrass yourself with thinking he's the only candidate to have fought immigration. I bet he was for amnesty as recently as 2010.....but don't let facts inconvenience your man crush.
That said, I think the weight of the Presidency might encourage him to behave in a more dignified fashion.
Actually, I’ve heard him go new tone a lot over the years.....just back in 2012, he was slamming Paul Ryan’s plan for being too extreme and he was talking about how he, Trump, would reach across the aisle to work with Democrats.
I’m telling you....what you should worry about is his entire adult liberalism, not his entire adult tone.....
RINO. Wimp. Not a real man.
You are wrong, that single issue would in fact put him in the Whitehouse, good thing he’s not going to listen to all of your awesome advise though.
I think the Trumpster is simply plowing through the defensive line for the real ball carrier... Ted Cruz. They are working together... Trump’s only job is to get the base going and then let Cruz cruise on by for the TD.
of course, all of recorded history makes a fool of you on that. Just watch dude, I’ll bookmark it to make sure you’re thoroughly embarrassed here.
You underestimate the rage over this issue, like all the other candidates have. That’s why they are behind. It’s just that simple.
People don’t want to hear about his biography. They want to pretend he is what he is pretending to be now. Please. The facts don’t matter on Trumpy.
Actually, yes. Andrew Jackson did.
Here’s something new a Republican candidate for office that didn’t have to have a popsickle stick taped to his back for a spine.
????
I’m going to let you come in after class and do that comment over. Maybe we can change that “D” to a “C”. :-)
I’m not trying to convince you of any particular position. I just see zero benefit to dissecting the minutiae of his position(s) on every nuance, every issue, what he did in 1993, what he said Tuesday....as FReepers are prone to do.
Why should we have to do that? Does it make us smarter? Richer? At least 80% of promising GOP candidates immediately, and I mean immediately turn into Dem-lites as soon as they get their set of Congressional restroom keys. I am done sweating the minutiae. The system has been turned into rubble. Recognizing that, it doesn’t merit my interest between now & November.
Trump is a volatile personality, he’s almost certainly gonna rattle himself off the tracks one way or another between now and Nov ‘16 and frankly, I don’t have the energy to build the daily spreadsheet of approved/disapproved activities.
He is not a politician. He may not be the perfect candidate. And he may not speak the Left's PC rhetoric when he campaigns. But even with his alleged faults, he is someone refreshing for a change than to have the same old boring establishment GOP candidate or the ones the liberal media foist upon us in every election. He may eventually fall out of the race or not make it past the primary or even quit if he doesn't think he has a chance to win. But for now he is garnering support from what used to be called the "silent majority" in this country and he needs to keep electrifying the crowds and make the other candidates step up to the plate and come to him. Sniping in the background won't cut it with this guy.
My coming to Jesus moment will only come when I have to finally choose my candidate for the general election. It is way too early to predict what will happen between now and then. I only see a couple other candidates that I like enough and think might have a chance to win, that I would vote for.
But for now though, this is just a campaign and Trump seems to be the lead horse right now. When and how will the other 15 GOP candidates break out of the back of the pack? I am waiting to see if anybody will and how they'll create as much excitement as Trump has so far. Most of them will be gone by the first of the year, if not sooner. Lack of support, lack of funding, lack of notoriety, lack of the skills it takes to be leader. With 16 candidates in the primary race, the lead pack will solidify soon. The rest are running to lose at that point.
I’m guessing he went the opposite way as Donald would have to.
No, we’ve had plenty of Trumans. Jackson was like that. Grover Cleveland, too. TR, too.
Rage can be a motivator, it's true. But we can't allow it to rob us of our good sense.
Don't just listen to what the man is saying. Look at his record and his history.
I think a Trump-Putin debate would be excellent.
