I didn't see the actual tape, but my sense is that Stewart was being sarcastic, i.e., he was saying that it's absurd for anyone to think that Obama would try to confiscate guns and declare martial law.

This is standard left-wing mockery; whenever they mock the very possibility of something happening, you can be sure it's something they plan to do. We all remember how they said it was absurd to think that anyone might suffer criminal sanctions for opposing gay marriage.

That was my take also. But remember, just 10 years ago they used to joke about "gay marriage" the same way.
