“There is absolutely no reason why the engine/steering/etc system is connected to the radio/phone/etc systems. None.”

Automobile design contain embedded systems which are connected via an internal vehicle network for purposes of optimized control, diagnostics, maintenance.
Vehicle internal networks have lacked sufficient system security architecture until recent years.
Auto manufacturers recognize it’s a problem, and have formed a consortium along with the IEEE to address vehicle security standards.
Search on the subject for further reading and updates.

“And that’s why I drive a 1997 truck. Minimal electronics, no satlink, no internet/wifi, etc....”

I like the newer technology. I have a 1998 Toyota Tacoma pickup. It has all the options like roll-down winders, adjustable seat and a radio WITH a cassette player! Even has a sliding winder in back so you can chuck the beer cans in the bed. Full-time 4 wheel drive (if you keep the hubs locked and forget to shift it out of 4WD). 75,000. miles.

My first Toyo truck (’81) was a 5-speed stick with manual steering, no radio or air conditioning. But it did have the beer can window.

Slam an auto tranny into park at freeway speeds will destroy the ratchet and pawl inside and it’s not pretty and you’re still going after it.

AFAIK, it has no connections to the outside world. If a FReeper knows different, please let me know."

Do you have an OnStar button in that truck...?

Remote start is one thing, being able to steer and control the gas like a radio control vehicle is totally wrong.

And I am not a fan of remote start either.

“I have an Hp printer that allows only minimal functions because I refuse to let it access the Internet. “

I bought my wife a newer model hp wireless printer and set it up for her. I went thru the hp setup site and created an hp email address for her without telling her. Anybody with that address can email directly to the new printer thru our network. I gave my daughter the email address. When I knew my wife was sitting at her desk, I texted my daughter to email my wife at her printer. Daughter sent her a mushy note. It surprised my wife quite a bit for the printer to wind up and spit out a sheet.

Now, I’m thinking that was a mistake...and will probably take the printer offline and switch it to a USB cable.

“Would the US Government allow it?”

****

Nope. The feds are requiring black boxes in vehicles.

Will be used both for tracking and mileage tax purposes.

Something like that was shown in the first Terminator movie. Sad waste of a car.

It’s totally wrong until you see somebody stealing your car and call OnStar and they make it stop and the bad guys get caught.
http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2013/Oct/1008-onstar.html

Plus of course there’s the fact that it’s a gateway feature on the path to self driving cars. Doesn’t really matter if you’re a fan, technology will continue to move forward.

Doubt it it makes sense. I had the idea of making a bare bones model of the jeep with out digital electronics ie EMP proof . You could advertise it with film footage of the A-bomb tests showing a jeep literally getting flipped by the blast & then when put right side up a guy gets in & drives off ,The slogan would be “Which would you rather drive? A pansy ass Prius or something that’s A-BOMB tested tough? “

CANBUSS systems connect every electrical and electronic part on some vehicles. You can’t even change out the sound systems on some new vehicles without “bricking” the vehicle if you don’t have proprietary software to do so.

“probably take the printer offline and switch it to a USB cable.”

I just use the printer as a scanner. Because I refused to hook it to the internet is will only scan single sheets rather than use the feeder. I have sometimes been able to make the feeder work by uninstalling it and then reinstalling it. But no more. Anytime I try to use the USB cable it repeatedly tells me that doing that will limit functionality. Well, from now on it limits my Hp purchases to zero.

Dang it! I hate it when episodes of Person of Interest (2013) become real life incidents. What about that journalist who died in that car crash in LA?

Combat_Boots, remember this?

“...plus still use the gear selector to slam it into PARK and neutralize the transmission.”

You’re assuming the gear selector in mechanically connected to the transmission. If it’s connected by wire and interfaces with the on-board computer, that may not be possible.

Hackers took control of a car and crashed it into a ditch by remotely breaking into its systems from 10 miles away whilst sitting on their sofa.

"Open the Pod bay doors, HAL."

Actually, if only the US used the metric system this would not have happened.

Oh...no doubt.
Like I said, if this became widespread it would be quite a threat to contemplate.
If one finds his/her car completely under remote control, one might have to find clever ways to halt the vehicle.

The CAN Bus will intercept things like wheel position, accelerator postition, gear, etc. and feed it to the actual implements (steering control, throttle, tranny). Yeah - you can really hose someone up by hacking into the CAN Bus. But we all like the nice power everything and we have to have our connectivity...
