The Queen was a very young girl and her crazy uncle was getting her to do it. Plus, in 1933 the Nazi coup had just happened and they hadn't yet revealed the true extent of their evil to the rest of the world.

Now, that crazy uncle of hers actually was a Nazi sympathizer.

Edward VIII was, if not a traitor, at least a complete failure at almost everything he touched with the possible exception of being a playboy at public expense. The man had no concept of responsibility.

Thank God for the Queen’s father, George VI. He had no training for the throne since he wasn’t expected to succeed, and was cursed with a severe speech impediment. But he knew his duty and accepted the burden that fate placed on his shoulders. The stress of that burden (along with a 5 packs a day habit) probably helped send to an early grave.

The whole family are ethnic Germans—Betty’s ancestor was named Sophia of Hanover (mother of George I).

Windsor is an Anglicization of the German name “Wettin”.
The surname Mountbatten (Prince Philip) is an Anglicization of “von Battenburg”.
