Trump: I Don't Think I've Ever Asked God for Forgiveness
7/19/2015 ^ | Todd Beamon

Posted on 07/20/2015 12:02:47 PM PDT by Kevin C

Donald Trump said Saturday that "I am not sure that I have" ever asked God for forgiveness, telling the 2015 Iowa Family Leadership Summit that "I just go on and try to do a better job from there.

"I don't think so," Trump, who is Presbyterian, said in response to the question from pollster and summit host Frank Luntz. Trump was among 10 Republican presidential candidates at the daylong event in Ames, Iowa.

"If I do something wrong, I think I just try to make it right," Trump said. "I don't bring God into that picture. I don't. "When we go into church — and when I drink my little wine, which is about the only wine I drink, and have my little cracker — I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness. I do that as often as possible because I feel cleansed, OK? "But, to me, that is important," Trump said. "In terms of officially, I could tell you absolutely. I don't think in terms of that. I think in terms of, 'Let's go on and let's make it right.'"

When Luntz first asked the question, Trump said that he was Presbyterian and that his pastor was the Rev. Norman Vincent Peale, the author and longtime pastor of Marble Collegiate Church in New York City. He died in 1993 at 95 years old. "That's a tough question," is how Trump began his initial response. "I am a religious person. I'm Protestant. I'm Presbyterian. People are so shocked and they find this out. "I go to church. I love God — and I love my church," he added. "The great Norman Vincent Peale was my pastor. He was so great. He would give a sermon, and you'd never want to leave."

Hah, Article 6 of the Constitution was put in there so none of this would matter. I’d vote for a Mormon, a Buddhist, a Jew, a Catholic, even a Baptist :), if he was a strong conservative. It’s all pandering anyway; every candidate lies about his piety.

He respects the topic enough to be completely honest. I’m okay with that. Not everyone worships in the same manner or for the same reasons.

I am not surprised at that. At least he is honest. It beats the crowd that pretends to be devout just for their own gain.

I could watch that over and over. That and the one where he says he has visited all 57 states. Thanks for the laugh. It’s a miracle that I can still laugh about him.

Was Peale the power of positive thinking guy?

Anyway, this is not surprising, but it should be a complete embarrassment. This won’t bother Democraps, but it will bother Republican voters, and this will get out through social media.

Nice straw man, Mr. Wideawake. Where faith meets religion is a very narrow bridge.

I’m willing to give Donald Trump a pass on this. God isn’t through with him yet.

But one thing is clear, Trump is speaking the truth for now. For whatever reason he is being used as the vessel for the truth to flow from and I will take the truth from whatever source it flows.

I hope for his sake that he continues to allow himself to be used for speaking the truth and for fighting the enemies of the truth.

"I’m a Christian and I have never asked God for forgivness because I’ve never done anything that I consider to have been a significant sin, which is to say I’m a pretty boring person."

A lawyer asked Jesus how to have eternal life. Jesus asked him what is written in the law? The lawyer replied "Love God and Love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus told him he had answered well that he had summed up the law.

Any failure to love is sin. Congrats on the boring life, but of you look closely you probably can find plenty that needs forgiveness.

The rich young ruler approached Jesus and asked how to have enternal life. Jesus rattled off about 7 of the 10 commandments. The young ruler said I've kept all of those from my youth. Jesus said go and sell all that you have and follow me. The rich young ruler went away sorrowful because he didn't want to sell all that he had. Jesus had effectively answered the question in a way that showed the ruler that he was putting his wealth before God.

The disciples saw this and were amazed and asked "Who then can be saved?" After all, this was a "very good" guy that Jesus just had the exchange with. Jesus said "With man it would be impossible but with God all things are possible."

Given that Trump thinks he himself is God, yeah, it makes sense he wouldn’t ask himself for forgiveness

True.

The other option is that he was just trying to give folks what he thought they wanted to hear, and was just honestly really bad at knowing what that would be on this subject.

Agree. My mother, no longer with us, liked Dr Peale too.

I have often thought God must get awful tired of ones asking for forgiveness then going out and doing the same thing again.

Trump is saying he wants to accept responsibility for his own actions.

An honest answer from someone that could have easily lied knowing the group he was addressing.

Well, we already knew Trump probably wasn’t the strongest Christian. He runs casinos and only recently changed his views on abortion.

Still he answered honestly that counts for something. He says he loves God. And he has stated he will defend Christian interests. He’s called out Obama for allowing Muslims from the middle east to immigrate but blocking Christians from immigrating.

It does sound like he needs to work on his relationship with God and understand the role of forgiveness better.

Is it a concern? Yes. It could impact his role model. It could impact a number of things. Is it a deal killer? No.
