SHELBY, N.C. (BP) North Carolina pastor Rit Varriale wants to see churches fly the Christian flag above the American flag as a biblical statement, reversing flag etiquette that calls for the American flag to be flown in the prominent position. Varriale, as senior pastor of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C., said the church installed its first-ever flagpole in order to raise the two flags in a special ceremony after morning worship on Sunday (July 5) in which the Christian flag was raised in the higher position which prompted interviews by Charlotte-area NBC, CBS and Fox affiliates.
If you stop and think about it, [flag etiquette] is inconsistent with what the Bible teaches us, Varriale said. We are first and foremost Christians who are called to serve the living God.

One of the slogans of the revolutionary war was “no king but king Jesus “.
I’m glad to see that pastor bringing that tradition forward in the actions that he took.
amen!
Good. He’s right. It’s supposed to be “God, Family, Country”, not the other way around.
Flag etiquette is clear. To fly the national flag in any other manner is disrespectful to it. Simple as that.
Of course not. The American flag deserves respect. The government that it stands for has exalted itself far above it’s Constitutional limits and so the displaying of it’s flag should demonstrate it’s rightful place.
Do you mean to imply that Scripture prohibits a Christian flag?
“This doesnt bring lost souls to Christ.”
And you know this...how?
Said in Sunday School my entire life:
“I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag, and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands; one Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe.”
I don't think it would have been one of Jesus's top priorities.
Because the waving of flags is not the work of the church as defined anywhere in God’s Word.
I thought that would be pretty obvious.
Here we have a man who claims to be called to service, thinking the best way to do so is by picking a fight for God. If you disagree with my opinion, please feel free to illuminate the scriptural mechanism by which this is supposed to operate.
I’m standing by to be edified.
You sound like what the Bible calls a ‘babe in Christ’.
That’s nothing to be ashamed of - we were all babes in Christ when we first believed.
May the indwelling of the Holy Ghost give you wisdom and peace as you grow to learn the full knowledge of the Grace of God.
Jesus is Lord.
And you sound like a Pharisee.
I can’t help but note that you declined to educate me as requested.
The UN rag should be used for bumwipe ...
Now, now...don’t get upset.
It’s just I have neither the time nor the inclination to educate someone who lacks understanding.
The best thing at this point is to spend some extra time with the Lord in quiet meditation this evening and you’ll feel better; even get a clearer perspective on the things of God.
Hope that helps.
Physician, heal thyself.
Besides Christians and the Church will be around long after the United States of America has crumbled to dust.
