It had been a decade since Beethoven had written a piano trio, and he had come a long way since then, moving far beyond Haydn and Mozart. The opening movement is marked allegro vivace con brio and starts with a unison line that lands on an F natural, the wrong note, where Lou slams on the brakes. That wrong note foreshadows excursions through the flat keys, which is unexpected for a piece in two sharps. At least the second subject is in the correct key of A Major. This performance skips the repeat of the exposition and jumps right into the development, which concentrates on the flat keys. The recap is a bit turbulent, and the second subject appears in the correct key of D Major. The coda starts tranquilly but ends with a bravura finish.
The slow movement is the longest part of the piece, and its marked largo assai ed espressivo. Its in D minor, weird, obsessive, uncanny, and its how the piece became known as the Ghost Trio. (I play this movement at the Canteen every Halloween.) Lou concentrates on one motif with strange whisperings and flutterings and with spare and bizarre textures. The ending, a chromatic drop done twice on the piano, sounds like someone walking on your grave. Its a terrifying moment.
How do you wrap up a piece like this? Beethoven writes a presto finale with a genial motif that echoes the slow movement but in D Major. Dark obsession becomes sunny escape, but even there the ghosts linger underneath the surface at times. He pulls off a joyous finish.
Next weekend its the second trio of Opus 70 and a string quartet.

You’ll enjoy it.
I really like Cello!
That’s three all-stars in the video. One is no longer among us, and he was a giant of the violin.
