Tactics are important. History is replete with examples of superior forces being defeated by smaller armies with a better battle plan. Conservatives lose for the same reason: We have no battle plan.
For years conservatives were content to be correct. Socialism doesnt work. Fascism was a horrendous failure. Communism collapsed under its own weight. Each time conservatives were vindicated in their opposition to these failed branches of the progressive ideological tree. But at the end of each battle we made the mistake of assuming the war was over. It wasnt and never will be.
Every progressive victory was preceded by repeated failure, sometimes decades of it. And each time, conservatives thought that was the end of the issue. A prime example of this is Hillarycare in the early 90s. It was a crushing rebuke of socialism and led to the Republican revolution in 1994. But the issue never went away, progressives never stopped working toward their goal, and, eventually, they won.
Remember the Contract with America in the 90s? A balanced budget amendment, term limits, Social Security reform, etc., etc. What happened to those policy goals? Aside from random candidates pledging to serve X number of terms, they arent talked about anymore with regularity on a national scale.
When Hillarycare went down, Republicans didnt rush to fill that void. The problems with the health care system did not miraculously go away when that project went down in flames. There was no concerted effort to rally the country around a free-market-based health care system. There were just minor nips around the edges to appease various groups. The GOPs failure to put forth a vision and fight for passage of any sort of reform in the wake of that victory led to a massive loss for the country on Obamacare.
Ive asked several Republican members of Congress, mostly conservatives, about the partys vision for replacing Obamacare. Most say they are waiting to get behind the plan of the eventual presidential nominee. But thats not a strategy. Thats a dodge.
Rather than focus on issues that affect peoples lives and create jobs, such as replacing Obamacare with a real, market-based system that empowers individuals, Republicans sit and wait. But no matter how long they wait, Godot never shows.
Conservatives are rudderless, but progressives are relentless.
Not a day goes by I dont get some email from the Democratic National Committee or Organizing for America or some other left-wing group extoling whatever issue theyre pushing. Forcing companies to provide paid sick leave to every employee? Its a national imperative. Raising the minimum wage? Lives depend on it. Stronger overtime rules? People are being hurt. Guns? People are being killed by these inanimate objects and we must stop it now.
Its all garbage and lies. These issues are nowhere near the top of the list of concerns of the American people, but, if history holds, some form of each will be rammed through Congress and signed by a progressive president within the next 20 years unless conservatives offer a counter-vision.
Thats not to say the GOP has to offer its own solutions to these problems. There are plenty of issues out there and no reason to let opponents choose the battlefield. But what do Republicans want to do? Whats their vision?
The left not only chooses the battlefields, it defines the terms of the fight. A lone monster does something awful with a gun, and the narrative becomes the need to control everyones exercise of their Second Amendment rights. The president and progressive politicians (and the media, but I repeat myself) stampede to microphones with a uniform message of how something must be done.
An illegal alien with a gun stolen from the government murders a woman walking with her father, and she might as well not have existed. For all his faults, were it not for Donald Trump, the name Kate Steinle not only already would be forgotten, it never would have been known. Yet progressives are unified in their You shouldnt punish everyone for the actions of one person message (in this case; they do want to punish everybody for Dylann Roofs crimes), and no prominent politician on the right points out the hypocrisy.
Progressives never stop, and they dont care how many bodies or how much destruction they leave in their wake in achieving their objectives. Dozens of Democrats were thrown out of Congress for their vote in support of Obamacare, and they knew it would happen before they cast it. Republicans cant bring themselves to use the constitutional power of the purse to force any concessions on Obamacare even though thats how most of them got to Congress in the first place because theyre afraid of how people could perceive it and they might lose their jobs.
Democrats have a strategy, a battle plan theyre willing to do anything to advance. Republicans have facts, statistics, history and no clue what to do with them. If you cant sell freedom, if you cant convince citizens of the importance of liberty, you will lose. More importantly, you will deserve to lose.
If the GOP and whoever the presidential candidate ends up being cant commit to an agenda with vision, one of growth and liberty with the tenacity their political opponents bring to its antithesis, 2016 will be another example of Republicans snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
In dealing with liberals Ann Coulter offers this rule in her book, How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must):
"If the liberal youre arguing with doesnt become speechless with sputtering, impotent rage, youre not doing it right. People dont get angry when lies are told about them; they get angry when the truth is told about them. If youre not being called outrageous by liberals, youre not being outrageous enough. Start with the maximum assertion about liberals and then push the envelope, because, as we know, their evil is incalculable... Nothing too extreme can be said about liberals because its all true."
Conservatives are not rudderless, they just have a very small outboard motor.
They expect us to compromise
When it comes to relentless, take a look at the sodomites. They represent about two percent of the population, yet they are winning every battle they fight in their quest to foist their agenda on the whole country because they are unrelenting and don't quit.
Conservatives are far more numerous. We need to stop drinking sherry and listening to harpsichord music--it's time to get relentless and militant. We need to rally, demonstrate, lobby, heckle, sue, engage in guerrilla theater, organize get-out-the-vote drives and adopt other tactics that our opponents successfully use, and we must refuse to take "no" for an answer or accept defeat in something like a supreme ciourt decision as final.

Well said, Robert.
May I pass it around?
The piece makers some very valid points. By attributing liberal success to a singular factor ignores those.
Yes, VF exists and contributes to many D victories.
But we are not losing the game because of a bad umpire, we still need to hit, field and pitch. So far we are not doing those basics.
Right. Which reinforces my point that Republicans should not have jumped in to propose more government “fixes” after Hillarycare failed.
Conservatives have no real leaders and are extremely disorganized.
The Left is willing to make every day a back-alley knife fight fought under Alinsky rules.
Being decent Judeo-Christian people, we just don’t have the stomach to fight them on their terms.
Most conservatives do not understand the mechanics of liberty well enough to explain them no matter what the issue.
Sin.
And the colleges...
And the schools...
And the cable networks...
And social media...
And all three branches of government...
The leftist control of the media should be routinely and casually acknowledged by republicans daily. Most Americans can't come to grips with the fact that our media isn't merely biased--they actively lie, suppress information and propagandize on behalf of an increasingly totalitarian democrat party. For democrats, it's like starting every hand of poker with pocket aces. It's just too easy.
We need leaders who aren't beholden to the corporations who fund them. Conservatives are stingy. We are getting the government we are unwilling to pay for. But somebody else surely is, and it's costing us a bundle.
BINGO! We have a WINNER!
It is because of massive voter fraud.
Read “The Art of Political War and Other Radical Pursuits” by David Horowitz. The outline for winning political campaigns is in that book. It has long been known that Republicans: 1. Have NO IDEA how to wage political war, 2. Lose because they are ALWAYS playing defense, and 3. Bore people with facts and statistics, while the leftists use pure emotion boiled down to sound bytes that get played over and over again in the media (think, “It’s for the children”)
We are all Greeks now...
Voter fraud is the primary reason.
