Only 25 percent of voters think Trump is a serious candidate for president, which has literally not changed since 1999. At that time, 23 percent of voters viewed Trump as a serious candidate when he ran briefly for the Reform Partys nomination the following year. Right now, 74 percent thinks hes not serious, and that figure hasnt changed since 1999 as well. One third of the country views him favorably, which is abysmal. But more Republicans tend to view him as a serious candidates when you break it down by partyand they also view him in a much more favorable light as well (via Gallup):
While a consistent percentage of Americans take Trump's presidential candidacy seriously, views by party groups have changed over time. Today, with Trump competing for the GOP nomination rather than a third-party bid, 41% of Republicans say they consider Trump a serious candidate, compared with 20% in 1999. Democrats, meanwhile, take Trump even less seriously as a candidate today (12%) than they did in 1999 (20%), while independents' views haven't changed.
[…]
In general, Trump typically has been seen more unfavorably than favorably since Gallup first asked about him in 1999, with the sole exception occurring in 2005, when 50% of the country viewed him favorably and 38% viewed him unfavorably. At the time, Trump starred in the hit show "The Apprentice" and was not actively involved in the political arena.
Trump fares better with Republicans overall, with a 49% favorable rating and 38% unfavorable score. But his high-profile candidacy appears not to have won him any additional admiration among Republicans -- his favorable rating among this group is about where it was in 2005.
At the same time, a lot of Republicans cant stand Trump, though he has tapped into a frustration over illegal immigration and the lack of the enforcement of the rule of law in general. That alone is frustrating for any voter, and Trump was the first candidate to address the issue in an aggressive manner. Moreover, his comments on trade surely will catch fire with an electorate that has become much more populist and skeptical of free trade deals, especially oneslike the Trans-Pacific Partnership that are trying to be finalized by this administration. The boost in polls is mainly grounded in the fact that he has name recognition. Illegal immigration was already going to be an issue next year over Obamas executive actions in the arena, and someone else (whos more serious) is going to discuss it on the campaign trial. The death of Katie Steinle, who was killed by an illegal immigrant in San Francisco, has started a debateor at least it shouldabout sanctuary cities, which purposefully skirt immigration enforcement laws. Leah found all of them, which you can read here. This only helps Trump at this point, though I hope more serious candidates (Walker, Rubio, etc.) start to take this issue on the road, and relegate the Trump candidacy as just pure entertainment because thats what it is at heart.
Good for you Dudley Doright. Would you inform on them for making or selling moonshine also?
Ah yes, the name calling for following the law!
Tell me, WHY do you think they should stay?
First they tried to discredit Trump by snickering, as Jeb! did. That didn’t work. Then they said he was a clown. That obviously didn’t work. Next, he is not a serious candidate, although he has been burning bridges. And, how serious is being at the top of the polls?
Well Booyah! If he’s doing this well with only 25% believing him, then the sky’s the limit when everyone sees his financials and hears a few more stemwinder speeches.
Booyah!
Americans can be turned with the right message. Many leaders came from nowhere to rise to the top. Don’t underestimate this guy.
I know I don’t and never have. So it begs the question just who are the people being polled and how are they really weighted?
I absolutely look with “Baited Breath” and Skepticism the poll results on various issues these media outlets publish.
It remains to be seen, but I agree. If he sticks with it and builds a good campaign team, you never know.
I have never been a Trump fan, but he beats a Bush.
I am never voting for ¡Yeb!
I’d rather have Cruz and intend to vote that way in the primary,
but I could hold my nose for Trump if he gets the nomination. If he builds that wall he
can even put his name on it if he wants.
Seems to be a thing with him.
It also explains all your Anti-Trump posts. He’s attacking your precious Illegal Immigrants.
We should stop using the word immigrant when talking about illegal aliens. The left and GOPe have conflated illegal aliens and immigrants and they are very different.
Immigrants are people who applied to be Americans, waited their turn, paid their fees, learned the language and complied with the laws.
Illegal aliens do none of that.
They cannot be immigrants.
Because we have let the terminology used deteriorate. It has slid from illegal alien to illegal immigrant to undocumented immigrant to undocumented American.
Usually the Ministry of Propaganda describes them when they are perps as “men from Lowell” as was the last story of people who were doing the raping that Americans won’t do.
We need to take the language back. The left and GOPe are trying to paint us as anti-immigrant, nothing could be further from the truth. I know many immigrants and some of them are some of my favorite Americans.
Illegal aliens on the other hand I am adamantly opposed to accomodating at all.
I have reported employers of illegal aliens to ICE.
Everyone should.
Good point. Chastisement taken and accepted.
Seriously? Too many to count.
ILLEGAL invaders *used* to trek through my property on a regular basis and I would report them when they did. That no longer happens with the new fencing in San Diego. Yes anti-fencing/pro-Perry people, fencing does work.
Good on you. So have I.
No chastisement intended, just a FRiendly suggestion..
Naw, I needed to be whacked.
