I feel safer in the backcountry of Yellowstone than I would on any street named Martin Luther King.

This suggests an alarming disconnect. Boy, that article perfectly illustrates the colossal absurdity of the worried white people reading the NY Times.
Everything they find "alarming" is so dopey and concocted and trivial - not enough soul on the national park visitor list.
Honestly, could there be a less "alarming" problem on the face of the earth?!

You would think a lot of them are used to sleeping with no power or heat. At least a couple days a month.

You're not American if you're African. I'm sick of the hyphenated unpatriotic Blacks.
So now Blacks are driving mountain sides looking for No Blacks and complaining?
At least she didn't rob and murder anybody over drugs.

From the article: “Jeff Cheatham grew up in southeast Seattle, and still lives in Mount Rainiers shadow. Yet, he said of Mount Rainier and other national parks, Ive never been, and never thought about going. A 29-year-old African-American writer, Mr. Cheatham said he didnt even know what a national park was, or what he would be likely to find at one. As far as I know, its a big field of grass, he said.”
Ahhh! The predictable outcome of a public school edookashum, I’d say.
That, and disinterested parents who could not be bothered to help broaden their child’s horizons.
And, the guy calls himself a writer...

Hey, let's force bus minorities into the wilderness.
Folks just don't seem to understand, many minorities, for reasons that are not my concern, DON'T WANT TO GO THERE.
I've been part way up Mt Rainer...the West side.
About 4000 ft up I hit a ridge that allowed full view of the majestic masterpiece of God's creation. Up Close.
The awe I experienced exceeded that of my first visit to Yosemite.

I was educated by the Chicago Public School system. In the sixth grade, we were taught US history. They spent a week on Teddy Roosevelt and National Parks. I guess now they are teaching about condoms and bananas instead.

“There was always nervous banter as we cruised through small rural towns on our way to a park. And there were jokes about finding a Whites Only sign at the entrance to our destination or the perils of being lynched or attacked while collecting firewood after the sun went down. Our cultural history taught us what to expect.”
And since what “Our cultural history taught us what to expect” didn’t happen, that implies your cultural history is bogus, doesn’t it?
You were not attacked in the small towns. You were not run off. You found no “Whites Only” signs. So your “cultural history” was dog poop on a stick, wasn’t it!

She just cant get any of her friends to come along. They are worried about unfriendly white people, hungry critters and insects,After this I'm sure the NPS will start a Colored Peoples Only Day for National Parks.
