Sanders: 'We have got to apologize for slavery'

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Wednesday said the nation owes an apology for slavery.

“As a nation — I don’t think as a president, but as a nation — we have got to apologize for slavery,” the 2016 Democratic presidential contender told host Joe Madison on Sirius XM’s “The Black Eagle.”

“As a nation we have got to apologize for slavery, and of course the president is the leader of the nation,” he added.

Sanders said that slavery had caused too much suffering to remain unaddressed.

“Obviously nobody in this generation was involved in slavery,” Sanders said.

Yes they do, and I (and especially my kids) have heard this over and over and over.

I know the jargon, I know the theories.

But what I've never heard, not from one whiteness professor, not from one rabble rouser, not even from Minister Farrakhan, is why things are so much worse, for the black residents of our formerly alabaster, gleaming cities - why, fifty years after the victory of the "movement", are things worse than they were in 1964, or 1954, or 1944?

What explains the relentless deterioration of living conditions in black America?

Something is seriously wrong with the dominant theory of race relations, and everybody with two eyes knows it.

I personally apologized to everyone I enslaved, and then to everyone my parents, grand-parents, great-grand-parents, great-great-grand-parents, and great-great-great-grand-parents enslaved. I followed that by buying each of them 40 acres and a mule. I’m done with apologies, with reparations, and with worrying about slavery. I’ve done everything I need to do to make amends, and those distantly related to slaves have received everything they deserve and far more. Our ancestors did. The ones a small minority of whom owned slaves. Almost seven hundred thousand of others apologized with their lives and the rest in that part of the country where slavery existed paid the dues by having nearly everything they owned destroyed and then suffering under a brutal occupation called "Reconstruction".

When the British pay reparations to the Irish and India, the Turks pay reparations to the few dozen peoples they butchered from Austria to Arabia, and Muslims reparate the descendants of the millions they enslaved from the shores of Scandinavia to the Niger Delta to the coast of Bali maybe we can discuss the matter further. In my dealing with several tribes, the first thing you can come to expect at every meeting is them giving you the “sins of your fathers” speech. They have some deep need to always get this off their chest on to the record. And at the end of the day it always boils down to how much money they are going to get for their approval of the project.
