House votes to ban Confederate flags at federal cemeteries [and in federal gift shops]

After just two minutes of floor debate late Tuesday evening, the House passed a measure to prohibit the display of Confederate flags on graves in federal cemeteries.

Despite the lack of fanfare, the vote marked the House's first entry into the debate over removing the Confederate flag from federal property that went beyond codifying already established policies.

Rep. Jared Huffman's (D-Calif.) amendment to the 2016 Interior Department spending bill seeks to end a policy that allows a temporary display of the flag in cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. It sailed through on a voice vote after minimal discussion on the House floor that encountered no opposition.

National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis issued a directive in 2010 that allows national cemeteries which commemorate a designated Confederate Memorial Day to decorate the graves of Civil War veterans with small Confederate flags. The directive states that decorative flags must be removed "as soon as possible" once the Confederate Memorial Day is over.

"We can honor that history without celebrating the Confederate flag and all of the dreadful things that it symbolizes," Huffman said.

As a lifelong Yankee I don’t really have a dog in this fight. But I do think this is insensitive and disrespectful to the families of Confederate soldiers who may be buried in those cemeteries.

Display of the Confederate Battle Flag

By the authority vested in me as Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the National Constitution and Regulations, and National Policies, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1: Recently many individual Brothers, Camps, Departments and the National Organization have been contacted regarding the position of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) on the display of the Confederate Battle Flag.

As the National Encampment is the supreme governing body of the SUVCW, and as no subsequent National Encampment has revisited this issue, the SUVCW’s official position remains the same. Neither the Commander-in-Chief nor the Council of Administration has the authority to amend the position.

Section 3: For clarity, the official position of the SUVCW regarding the display of t he Confederate Battle Flag is included in this order, as follows:

Why do these nonthinking, LIB asshats feel this is so important? Maybe it has to do with the fact that they are mentally disturbed.

Its not only disrespectful, I believe it may be illegal and downright treasonous.

Confederate war dead have exactly the same legal status as any soldier buried in Arlington today by an act of congress.

Cowards, bandwagon jumpers and panderers, all of them.

To paraphrase somewhat,

I swear by my life, the one I love, that I will never vote for another incumbent.

They are no more offended by the flag than by almonds. It is solely a wedge issue to capitalize on and overwhelm the system.

Cloward Piven folks. Read up and learn.

Never forget it’s chickenshit republicans throwing Southern heritage under the bus. All they are doing is electing Hillary Clinton.

Doesn’t matter to this discussion. What matters is that lesser evils cased this to happen, not who I will vote for.

The House that passed this is run by Jon Bhoner, not Nancy Pelosi.

“Confederate soldiers were and are counted among all honored American war dead”.

Look for Republicans to work to get that bill revised and not include Confederate veterans as US vets. That’s coming as sure as the sun coming up tomorrow. As it stands now the VA has to provide a marker for Confederate veterans. Democrats have to do nothing, just tell that racist Republicans what they want and presto it’s done. Get ready to say President Hillary Clinton.

We need to remind congress that Confederate Soldiers were given the same status as Union soldiers by an act of congress.
