After getting hit with a financially-crushing $135,000 fine Thursday for their decision to not bake a cake for a lesbian wedding, the owner of the Oregon "Sweetcakes by Melissa" bakery has a dire warning for Americans.
"For years, we've heard same-sex marriage will not affect anybody," Aaron Klein said in an interview with The Blaze. "I'm here firsthand to tell everyone in America that it has already impacted people."
Aaron and his wife Melissa are required to immediately write a $135,000 check to the lesbian couple they refused to bake a wedding cake for, Rachel Cryer-Bowman and Laurel Bowman-Cryer, to compensate them for emotional damages.
Aaron Klein says that Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian's order requires the couple to use "personal property" rather than only business assets to pay the vast sum and that it "has the potential to financially ruin" the family of five. Avakian "knew that full well going into this," said Klein.

I don’t believe he is an administrative law judge. In everything I’ve read, he’s simply been called a “commissioner” (wel-l-l, there were a few other names.
That information is usually on file at the county assessor’s office.
Just sayin’.
Just saying that the ACLU would be MORE offended if we gave him a proper hanging with hymn singing before the send off.
Would these people be required to decorate a cake for a Wiccan celebration?
I suppose Wiccan activists would make a fuss.
I don’t get any of it anymore.
.
Nothing wrong with that at all. Freedom of association, I believe they call it.
And if you cannot find any merchant willing to serve your tastes, perhaps a mirror instead?
One would also be free to open their own homo-cakery if they felt there was an unserved market beyond their own selves ...
So then what’s wrong with the idea of requiring merchants to post notices on who they don’t want to serve if we can agree that it is, or at least used to be, a fundamental right?
Under the Oregon law then obviously they would be required to do so.
I suppose Wiccan activists would make a fuss.
They could take the same route that the lesbian couple did and file a complaint with the government agency.
I dont get any of it anymore.
Some people do seem to be running amuck, that is true.
When do we realize that homosexuals’ minds are twisted and warped? Just like their sexual proclivities. They are broken the same way pedophiles are or any other people suffering from mental abberations.
BOTH.
I have no problem with any merchant voluntarily posting such notice. A law requiring it is a bridge too far, and one more tyranny of the thin-skinned.
Good post. Yes this “commissioner” is clearly violating the bakery owner’s 8th Amendment rights for this cruel and indeed unusual punishment and is also likely far exceeding his statutory authority for levying fines and other punishment.
He at most can fine this business $1,000 to $5,000 max and could also take action against their business liscense. He cannot dictate from what source the fines can be paid and also cannot put gag orders on them or have them imprisoned. Only a court judge can put a gag order place or order how a fine is to be paid.
These folks need to fight this hard and not let this stand. They also need competent legal representation. I’m surprised Jay Sekulow and the ACLJ haven’t come to these folks defense, due to this being a precedent setting test case.
I still don’t understand why a conservative group (preferably a “protected minority” as the Left is obsessed with race) turn the tables and do this to a business run by homosexuals.
What I do not get: Wedding cakes are not created equally. They depend mightily on the skill and style of the artist who makes them. Bakeries have tastings and picture books of their creations for this reason.
The cake from Kroger and from a specialty bakery are made from the same stuff - the difference is the execution.
So the artist should not be required if only because artistry can’t be forced.
If there is any penalty, it should be equal to the cost of a generic sheet cake with plain frosting - at most maybe a few hundred dollars. Artistry cannot be forced.
A merchant should always be free to refuse service to anyone. The free market will decide if he or she has a viable business enterprise. It doesnt take government to tell us what to sell, to whom it should be sold, or what to charge.
___
Clear, concise and 100% correct. I wish these truths were as obvious to everyone as they are to you and me.
Should a merchant have to post a sign listing who they will not serve?
___
Short answer - NO!
Some friends. The same MO was used on the Christian flower shop owner in Washington state.
What is it about “The Cake” in this modern day battle? Why would a sane person want someone who admits that they will not put their heart into it, make your wedding cake? Is that all your wedding cake means to you?
The Rebel flag/ISIS flag cake @ Walmart? “The Cake” is becoming a very powerful weapon.
Why doesn’t a christian or even an Atheist group go to an Islamic or homosexual bakery and demand service?
Is there any way the bakers can sue or file a grievance against Avakian?
Of course, we all saw a single gay US District Court judge overturn the popular vote on Prop 8 and where that ultimately led. The USA is currently turned upside down.
Pennies? F*** that.
Those clamlickers and that state would not get a single cent out of me. I would have been in Texas the week after this notice to pay was received.
