Every year the Fourth of July is marked by ringing affirmations of American exceptionalism. We are a special nation, uniquely founded on high ideals like freedom and equality. In practice, however, much of what sets the United States apart from other countries today is actually Southern exceptionalism.

Appalachian Mountain Folk.
Well, that's a record. Stopped reading right after the very first word.
Now, if the author has used a real word, such as "faith", instead of some made up word, I might have kept reading.
Squirrel! Shark!
Funny how retirees move from the north to the south, but not the reverse.
I plan on moving south after the successful completion of civil war II.
I will hopefully aid in the prosecution of the entire legislative branch (those we have not yet hanged).
I’m a northerner but I say thank God for the south. If it weren’t for them we’d be an even more socialist country than we already are.
I moved from Seattle to Kentucky. I know it’s not technically “the south”, but man, what a difference. I feel like I’ve gone back in time 50 years in a lot of very, VERY good ways.
I honestly don’t know how I’d be handling what’s been happening the last few years if I were still in Seattle. I’d probably want to move to KY. :-)
Maybe the author thinks the South should be another country?
Me thinks the author is a NWO LGBT’er who likes things where they don’t belong. He should write an article another sector that’s even more religious than Christians like say the Muslims ... but I bet he won’t because he’s really a chichen $hit liberal who writes this type of nonsense because he wants tha NAMBLA type he so loves from his gay community and posts from computer wearing pajama boy attire. Now go back to your day of seducing young boys online on your day off...
Wikipedia, for what it’s worth, describes Michael Lind in his biographical sketch as a former neoconservative in the tradition of New Deal liberalism. In other words, another freaking RINO. I guess he needed brownie points from his establishment and lefty friends on the party circuit so he puts outs this hit piece on the South.
“In practice, however, much of what sets the United States apart from other countries today is actually BIGFOOT. “
Ahem...

Ah! A gentleman and a scholar!
I guess the author doesn’t like the independent minded south on Independence Day.
I guess the author enjoys being a smug little judgmentalist...
American property rights are the envy of civilization. The UK makes renters out of all but a handfull and the crown. 400 select few own scotland. (http://www.amazon.com/The-Poor-Had-No-Lawyers-ebook/dp/B006WB2E9Q/ref=reader_auth_dp)
Bounty land warrants for military service for the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Spanish Ameircan War, the Civil War and more created a continent of yeomen farmers. As fewer have skin in the game, they are more ignorant of their impoverishment.
Skimmed the article, found this that brightened my day .
The northern progressives who joke about the U.S. jettisoning Jesusland and merging with Canada will not get their wish. But there is hope:
I guess the author enjoys being a smug little judgmentalist...
...and being homely as well...
