I owe an apology. On the eve of this Independence Day, I have a renewed sense of what this country stands for, and how I personally could help achieve it. The promise of equality and freedom is one that all of us have to work for, at all times. I know this as a survivor of the Japanese American internment, which each day drives me only to strive harder to help fulfill that promise for future generations.
I recently was asked by a reporter about Justice Clarence Thomass dissent in the marriage equality cases, in which he wrote words that really got under my skin, by suggesting that the government cannot take away human dignity through slavery, or though internment. In my mind that suggested that this meant he felt the government therefore shouldnt be held accountable, or should do nothing in the face of gross violations of dignity. When asked by a reporter about the opinion, I was still seething, and I referred to him as a clown in blackface to suggest that he had abdicated and abandoned his heritage.
This was not intended to be racist, but rather to evoke a history of racism in the theatrical arts. While I continue to vehemently disagree with Justice Thomas, the words I chose, said in the heat of anger, were not carefully considered.
I am reminded, especially on this July 4th holiday, that though we have the freedom to speak our minds, we must use that freedom judiciously. Each of us, as humans, have hot-button topics that can set-us off, and Justice Thomas had hit mine, that is clear. But my choice of words was regrettable, not because I do not believe Justice Thomas is deeply wrong, but because they were ad hominem and uncivil, and for that I am sorry.
I often ask fans to keep the level of discourse on this page and in comments high, and to remember that we all love this country and for what it stands for, even if we often disagree passionately about how to achieve those goals. I did not live up to my own high standards in this instance.
I hope all of you have a wonderful, safe and joyously free July 4t, the first where all married couples in the U.S. can enjoy the full liberties of matrimony equally. It is truly a blessing to be an American today.
Racist. Why hasn’t he been taken off the media?
He should set his phaser on stun and sit on it.
What kind of sex toy is that on the wall?
Drama queen had a hissy fit but backed off when he felt a nip in the air.
And yet he continues, in his “apology,” to twist Thomas’ words into something he did not say.
Chuck Berry didn’t tell Sulu to quit singing. Ono will have to.
I am surprised that he didn’t say that when the reporter asked him the question, he just went off half-cocked.
That bitch e crazy
For the first time, Takei is not enjoying the blowback.
He'd enjoy that.
They took a beautiful symbol, the rainbow, and thrashed it. They did worse to the temple of the human body. In basic they took the perverted butt plungers up to the second floor of the 35’ barracks and tied their “johnson” to a 65 lb foot locker with a 30 foot rope. Out the window it went. We never saw the sodomites again.
Nothing dignified about being a pervert.
So it is not of special importance to me what the law says about marriage. It is of overwhelming importance, however, who it is that rules me. Todays decree says that my Ruler, and the Ruler of 320 million Americans coast-to-coast, is a majority of the nine lawyers on the Supreme Court.
The voters didn't decide this. It could and should have been left for the states to decide individually, but that wouldn't have been nearly as enjoyable for the homofascists as having it shoved down America's throat by the Supreme Court's leftists, as though the Constitution did not exist.
This was not intended to be racist, but rather to evoke a history of racism in the theatrical arts.
Out here in the real world, George, your comment was a blatantly racist personal attack. Also, the sun sets in the west, and two plus two is four.
George, on your next mission to an alien world, wear the red shirt.
Is is true that he and William Shatner never got along?
I’m not buying it. His LGBT teflon, as Dana Loesch might put it, wasn’t as durable as he thought and he’s backtracking in light of all the heat coming down on him.
He felt that Shatner was too much of a camera hog and there should be more Sulu. (Notice in their last movie he helmed his own ship.) Shatner doesn’t remember having problems with him.
