Montana polygamist family applies for marriage license

BILLINGS - Given the U.S. Supreme Court's recent ruling that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states, a Lockwood family is now looking to solidify rights of its own.

We first told you about the Colliers in January of 2015 when the polygamist family appeared on an episode of the TLC show, "Sister Wives."

The polyamorous movement is a national push to allow marriage between multiple partners.

Nathan Collier and his two wives, Vicki and Christine, said Tuesday that they are simply looking for equality. Nathan is legally married to Vicki, but also wants to legally wed Christine.

On Tuesday, Nathan and Christine traveled to the Yellowstone County Courthouse to see if they would be awarded the right to marry under the Marriage Equality Act.

Polygamy is illegal under Montana state law, and recognized as a misdemeanor offense.

"We just want to add legal legitimacy to an already happy, strong, loving family," said Nathan.

As the two filled out their marriage application they were met with questions.

"There's a spot on there where you put the dissolution date of your previous marriage and we put 'not applicable,'" said Christine.

In fact, the couple was met with varied reaction from employees, who were caught off guard.

"So, are you legally married, you didn't get divorced?" asked one clerk.

"We'll have to deny that, let me go grab the other supervisor real quick so I can get confirmation but as far as I'm aware you can't be married to two people at the same time," said another clerk.

The Colliers were initially denied the license, and the clerk later returned to tell the couple that they would have to check with the Montana Attorney General's office.

When asked for comment, the Attorney General's office referred MTN News to two sections of Montana law, stating polygamy is illegal.

"It's two distinct marriages, it's two distinct unions, and for us to come together and create family, what's wrong with that?" said Christine. "I don't understand why it's looked upon and frowned upon as being obscene."

The couple's goal is to have their story heard.

The Colliers say if the state of Montana could only recognize their marriage as legal, it could be the catalyst for other states to follow suit.

"All we want is legal legitimacy. We aren't asking anybody for anything else. We just want to give our marriage and our family the legitimacy that it deserves," said Nathan.

MTN News is still awaiting to hear whether or not the marriage application was officially denied.

If it's accepted, it would be the first in the nation.

Don’t forget that wonderful activity, “fisting.” I wonder what age is typical for a homo to start wearing adult diapers....

So, to avoid the death tax, farmers should marry their kids. That way, the estate would pass on to their spouse(s) with no death tax.

Can we dare question how people may “love each other”?

Who are we to say that “their love is illegal”?

The same logic, if followed, grants these people the right to marry. Unless Elena Kagan shows me where in the Constitution it says marriage is limited to 2 people, because we know it doesn’t say it was limited to one man and one woman. I think their right to due process is being infringed, their right to equal access is being trampled by a hateful and bigoted Justice Ginzburg.

These people love each other, how dare Elena Kagan say they cannot get married.

== = = = = = = = = = = = = =
That is the key, turn this crap around on them.

Take your cat to get a dog license and when they say you are crazy just tell them in your ‘heart of hearts’ it is a dog, besides you don’t like cats.
Just have to act as witty as they are acting stupid.

I figured just to muck the system up, two straights ought to marry if one has good insurance, the other better benefits etc. Don’t have to worry about the sex part as there is (at least not yet) no law saying you have to have sex with your ‘spouse’. On the other hand, would ‘they’ consider the marriage not to have been consummated so maybe an annulment in order after all the paper work is filed.

This could turn out to be a great adventure.......

People THINK they are confused because I named my black cat Whitey and my white cat Blacky.

Wait till you take the menagerie to the Vet and tell them your dog is a cat, your cat is a mouse, your snake is a goat and so on....Then- to put the icing on the cake - if a male ask where the ladies room is.......

Noah would be happy. Hard to believe some of our Biblical leaders had a load of wives. How on Earth did they manage. It is tough enough with one. That family on Sister Wives shows how difficult it is to have more then one wife. He is constantly running around trying to put out fires. Is that really a life?

After the Supreme Court’s decision is there any argument against polygamy being legal?

Polygamists aren't a protected class therefore their Constitutional rights are not being violated by being denied multiple marriages.

It's about dignity.

The SCOTUS ruling was about two people who have incompatible sex organs being denied dignity by the state.

So if SCOTUS can give sexually perverse people dignity by a court ruling, then I don't see how they can deny similar dignity to groups of people.

You are way behind. People have been marrying animals for over 10 years already. The most famous is the woman who feel deeply in love with her Dolphin and married the dolphin in a very nice ceremony (according to reports). The picture of the couple is in the link.

Yeah but is the marriage recognized by the state? If not, this woman and her dolphin were denied “dignity” by the state.

It’s time for the fishophile to get her state given dignity back.

Yes, but it’s one more hit for marriage and for traditional society. And it will help all the trans and “gender fluid” people.

I actually hope they sue. They have made such a mess of marriage plus I want to see the liberals cringe and stutter and whatever excuses they give. It will be a pleasure to watch them squirm.

I think it was Florida. Perhaps it was just a ceremony but no license. I am not sure if the state excepted the marriage or not.

The question was how can the courts deny this kind of marriage request. And the answer is "easily".
