McConnell: GOP out of legislative options to fight gay marriage

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell concedes that there’s little congressional Republicans can do to fight the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide, though he predicted a flurry of litigation aimed at protecting “religious liberty” in light of the decision.

The Kentucky Republican has been a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage, one of just six Senate Republicans to sign an amicus brief urging the high court to reject federal protection of same-sex marriage. And though he reiterated to Kentucky TV station WDRB on Tuesday evening that his position has not changed, he also said there is little that conservative opponents can do about it.

“I’ve always felt that marriage is between one man and one woman and the Supreme Court has held otherwise. That’s the law of the land,” McConnell said. Asked if Congress can do anything, he replied: “I don’t think so. I think the courts have pretty well spoken.”

The majority leader said the Senate will “be taking a look at whether religious liberty needs to be enhanced,” a reference to conservative-backed legislation that would exempt people or groups that oppose same-sex marriage from federal intervention. One proposal spearheaded by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) has little chance of passing the Senate, where all but one Democrat supports same-sex marriage.

That, or they could get the amendment process rolling. Sure, we might never get the amendment ratified, but this guy is surrendering before he has even tried.

More “it’s the law of the land” BS from the GOP establishment.

And you can bet they are breathing a sigh of relief for both rulings.

Well it’s a lesser evil. We just HAD to send “IF elected I will work with Barack Obama” Mitch back to DC no matter what. I learned that from ‘conservatives’ on FR.

We should direct some of the anger for those here that helped empower him as well since their support for the GOPe helped make this mess happen.

". . . taking a look at whether religious liberty needs to be enhanced." - McConnell

According to the Framers of America's Constitution to structure and limit government power, no branch of government, including the Legislative, was delegated a power to interfere in religious freedom or its free exercise.

North Carolina's James Iredell, appointed by President Washington as a Justice on the first Supreme Court declared:

“Had Congress undertaken to guarantee religious freedom, or any particular species of it, they would then have had a pretense to interfere in a subject they have nothing to do with. Each state, so far as the clause in question does not interfere, must be left to the operation of its own principles.” - James Iredell - Debates on the Constitution, NC, 1788 (Appointed by Geo. Washington to First Supreme Court of the U. S.)

How about this option, which is the one they will choose: leak some stuff about how you are really really torn and want so much to do something but it’s so complicated an issue that you need to study it carefully and consider all options; everything is on the table! Then do nothing.

Tears in my eyes laughing at the thought of Boehner impeaching any Justice!
Or Mitch removing her!

What a legislature.

Just like in Dred Scott and Plessey vs. Ferguson, Mitch?

This loser won't fight for anything.

McConnell: GOP out of legislative options to fight gay marriage

I told any Freeper who would listen that McConnell would be a bigger disaster than The Democrat.

People on your own side stabbing you in the back is far more destructive than an enemy attempting to do it.

Kentucky voters should have voted for the Democrat.

John Brown didn't shrug his shoulders after the Dred Scott decision and say "Oh, well. We can't do anything more about it because it is now the law of the land."

But he was merely crazy, not stupid.

McConnell is happiest when he is bending over and getting screwed by the Democrats and Obama. There was plenty he could do a bout TPA, Obamacare Cromnibus etc, which he CHOSE not to do. He s a poor excuse of a human being.

You are wrong on that.

He did something on Cromibus. He allowed the rules to be changed to get a budget passed with only 51 votes instead of the 60.

Then he called for a silent vote so the RINOS would be not held accountable for LIEING before the election that they would not vote for it.

See Ted Cruz’s book. He talks about this exact thing.

He is a traitor, liar, fraud and con man.
There is NOTHING Mitch McConnell says you can believe other than he is a whore for the Chamber of Commerce.

Too bad Senators Cruz and Lee have already offered up REALISTIC options on fighting this government overreach, that Midgy supports, and likely profits from.

Midgy at his Best.
