Republicans lose sight of reality

If you’re old enough to recall how the landslide election of Lyndon Johnson over the hapless Barry Goldwater spelled the end of the Republican Party, or how Ronald Reagan’s election amounted to a revolution that put the Democratic party on the mat until — more or less — the end of time, then you will understand my caution in saying that while the Republican Party may well survive its recent difficulty, Republicanism itself is dead. I think.

The recent difficulties consist of taking the wrong side in the great health care debate, not only opposing what came to be called Obamacare, but refusing to produce an alternative. People are worried about their health and the party comes up with buffoons like Sarah Palin who invents death panels and trivializes the whole debate. Obamacare is not only the law of the land, it is the inevitable next step toward universal health care — just like most countries have, even the poorer ones.

The party’s other recent difficulty is being on the wrong side of just about every social issue you can think of. The Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage throughout the land and Republican after Republican stepped forward to denounce the decision and prattle on about what God intended — as if any of them know.

Some, like Chris Christie, reached for that hoary cliche about unelected men in black robes. Christie is hardly the first to discover the awesome power of the American judiciary and he turns out to be using the same language school desegregation opponents did in 1954. Then, too, an alleged horrible dictatorship of the judiciary was denounced — but the nation moved on.

They always reach back to black civil rights. It’s the one and only time they were mostly right and had the moral high ground, forgetting, of course, the Eisenhower and the Republicans in congress were very much on the same side and that millions of Democrats were against them. Every other issue, whether it be “the war on poverty,” Vietnam, unilateral nuclear disarmament, homosexuals and etc. they were demonstrably wrong.

High ground that they immediately exploited to make blacks dependent on themselves politically.

Their hero was JFK, but they were forced to make do with LBJ. Who was, in fact, a pluperfect liberal -- power-hungry, conniving and thoroughly corrupt.

The first alternative to Obamacare was to continue with the existing status quo, that would have been vastly superior to Obamacare. To castigate the GOP for not proposing something better when the Democrats came up with something vastly worse than what we had before just doesn’t seem right. For every dime’s worth of good Obamacare has done it has done ten thousand dollar’s worth of damage. Obamacare is definitely NOT better than nothing and the damage from it is just beginning.

-- The red/blue Rep./Dem. distinction goes back only to 2000, when it was introduced by Tim Russert. --

The front man for the news cabal, on that. Too much similarity among the news outlets to support belief they are independent in what they report.

“the status quo would’ve been better than obama care but the status quo needed to be changed...”

I won’t argue against that but I will simply say that the status quo at that time was the result of decades of meddling in health care by the government already. Everytime they “fix” things we wind up much worse off. What is needed is not a new plan from the GOP but a total elimination of government interference. I believe the result would be an astounding DROP in the cost of health care. There are many new developments which should have resulted in a decline in costs but because of government requirements we have had instead an astounding rise in costs. Surgeries that used to require long hospital stays are routinely done on an outpatient basis now but instead of costing much less they cost as much or more than they used to cost.

Didn't voters in 31 states vote to define marriage as being between a man and a woman? 5 unelected, ideological judges with robes(and agendas)simply overturned the will of the people, like it did with Prop. 187/others that didn't fit in with the progressive agenda.

The worst of Obamacare has yet to rear it's ugly head...it was planned that way, front-loaded with goodies, yet another unsustainable "feel good" entitlement program designed to mentally imprison it's inhabitants while bankrupting the nation.

When it comes to "being on the wrong side of social issues"...liberalism is on the wrong side of reality...eventually it destroys everything it touches...join them at your own peril.

Finally, just because they've convinced enough people to "jump in, the water's fine!", doesn't mean some of us(who aren't sucked in by all the propaganda)don't know...it's also filled with alligators.

America simply needs rehab(or an enema?), after all the drugs it ingested from follywood/academia.

Meanwhile, it wouldn't hurt to find the actual heads of the snakes pushing this destructive agenda...and remove them.

...duty calls.

The only thing they could have offered that would make them look like HEROES to me would have been to get the government out of it altogether and that would not fly with most of those who call themselves conservatives, let alone those who have the very least of “progressive” tendencies. I suspect that whatever anyone might come up with short of getting the government totally out of the picture would make about as much sense as replacing half the roof on a building after a tornado has taken the entire roof off. We all know how much good that would do.

I put the possibility of any incumbent or candidate for any office in either party endorsing what I am saying at exactly ZERO. No, I don’t feel lonely, I have traveled many a mile unaccompanied.
