There is something to that; in the Americas, I believe Indians only played a notable role in Mexico’s bid for independence. Otherwise, the revolts were the upper classes against the home governments (using the rest as bullet-stoppers), while in the American colonies many of those fighting weren’t even English. This is why we have no national language; the large number of Germans - the largest ethnic minority in the colonies - may have simply gone home to their farms & shops rather than fight.
Brazil was a completely different case; the revolutionaries installed a Portuguese prince as the king of Brazil when they first won their independence.
