f youre feeling the need for some speed, then youre in luck: During the Berlin press day for Terminator Genisys last week, Skydance Productions David Ellison and Dana Goldberg provided some intel on the status of the sequel to the 1986 fighter-ace blockbuster Top Gun. Among the tidbits: That Top Gun 2 would take place in modern day; that it would involve Maverick, the hotshot, hot-dogging Navy pilot character that helped make Tom Cruise one of the biggest stars in the world; and that it would revolve around the increased use of unmanned drones in military aviation.
Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now, said Ellison (via Collider). He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.
I think this is a movie that should be in 3-D and in IMAX, and again something that you can shoot practically, Ellison went on. When you look at the world of dogfighting, whats interesting about it is that its not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out . It is very much a world we live in today where its drone technology . So its really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots, and what that culture is today.
This isnt the first sequel to almost get airbourne: Back in 2010, original Top Gun director Tony Scott was working on a follow-up that also wouldve involved the return of Maverick and, potentially, Cruise. (Scott passed away in 2012.) Theres no word yet on whether Cruise will sign up for this new attempt. So for now, well just have to hold on to that lovin feeling a little bit longer.
Is Maverick gay now?
Fade to black, roll credits.
His love interest turned dyke on him
Depending on how they pursue the plot, I might consider going to see it.
What with todays equipment and todays special effects, I am sure this is going to be a fun ride.
If they bring Val Kilmer back, he’ll have to be recast as a C-130. It’s like all of Al Sharpton’s flab landed on him.
“original Top Gun director Tony Scott was working on a follow-up”
Alas, he developed inoperable brain cancer and, true to his characters’ aggressive & violent form, jumped off a bridge.
What hes in charge of Top Gun school now?
lol...that was my first thought, too
he will never be happy unless he is going mach 2 with his a** on fire...
If Maverick *is* now gay, it won’t be a stretch for Cruise.
If you believe the rumors, Maverick was gay then.
“What hes in charge of Top Gun school now?”
Believe it or not, that was kinda what I was thinking. as the original movie ended, it sounded like Maverick was gonna become an instructor at Top Gun school.
I could picture him as the seasoned combat pilot (Tom Skerritt back in ‘86) having to deal with a new arrogant upstart coming in to Top Gun school.
I give. I give. That is exactly what was going through my head. Add a rainbow fighter with pink afterburner exhaust and the picture is complete.
