No, the tinkers in Ireland were not really gypsies. They were descendants of people who had been displaced from their land by the English, but they were of Irish blood.

Peter Pan's "tinkerbell" got her name from the Irish Tinkers. I think "tinker" is from "tin". They would go around offering to bang your pots and pans back into shape.

ps Tinkerbell isn't real.
