Not true. Church tax exemptions were built into the Income Tax. Tax exemptions and taxes came into existence at the same times.

I know many churches that have refused to register as 501 c 3 organizations including the one I currently am a member of.

President Johnson started the exemptions to shur them up. From what I can remember he thought churches had too much influence on policy making. I coud be wrong. That was a long time ago.
