This will have the potential to be lengthy, so bear with me and I will try my best to relate my honest feelings on the Confederate flag in question, which was actually the battle flag carried by several Confederate army regiments and was not the official flag of the Confederacy.
I was born in 1936, a mere 71 years after the Civil War ended, when the South was looked upon by what seemed to be a majority of the Northern States as an inbred, backward, uneducated, slow-talking and slower-thinking people, with low morals and a propensity for incest.
This was in the days before television, and about all the folks up North knew about Southerners was what they heard. There were a lot of people who took great pleasure in proliferating the myth, and some still do it to this day.
As you might suppose, people in the South bitterly resented this attitude of superiority, and in some quarters the words damn and Yankee became one word. And a somewhat fierce type of Southern pride came into being.
The Confederate battle flag was a sign of defiance, a sign of pride, a declaration of a geographical area that you were proud to be from.
Thats all it is to me and all it has ever been to me.
I cant speak for all, but I know in my heart that most Southerners feel the same way.
I have no desire to reinstate the Confederacy. I oppose slavery as vehemently as any man, and I believe that every human being, regardless of the color of their skin, is just as valuable as I am and deserves the exact same rights and advantages as I do.

An EXCELLENT post, thank you !
Nobody in their right mind wants slavery back. Can you even imagine having to beat people into working? They hate you but are living in your house and listening to every word you say. You should read what Thomas Jefferson’s daughter had to say about it. She hated it.
Its bad enough to have to put up with the well paid black servers in restaurants and govt offices. Can you imagine the passive aggressive behavior of slaves? My people were smart enough to never own any. They fought for their homeland not slavery.
Only 3000 people in the South owned slaves during the Civil War. 1,200 people in the North owned slaves during the Civil War. What was their excuse?
No wonder the South voted Democrat back then.
You will need to bring a lunch and a shit load of friends as it will be a long day. A country boy can survive!
Isn’t that just tea in the South?
I have dozens of southern cook books and soul food cookbooks. I love everything about the South.
I am a 50-something newly-minted Social Worker, working at a psych hospital (liberal central). I taught a young colleague a few things or two about slavery (including Africa’s complicity) on Facebook the other night, because she posted a picture of a dog crapping on the Stars and Bars (which I hold dear). I may seriously lose my job over this, but it’s worth it. I’m sick to death of the liberals. My colleage tried to tell me, “Well, we live in the United States” and I posted, “No, Africa does NOT get a pass on this, because the warlords were complicit in this.” I’m fed up to the back teeth with the hypocrisy of the perpetually offended. They HATE it when someone else becomes offended and calls their bluff.
This afternoon I saw a kid flying a confederate flag on his pickup parked at the grocery and pulled up beside him and in my snarkiest, whiny voice said, “You disagree with the president, your a raaaacist!” He laughed, I laughed and then told him God bless, you’re doing the right thing.
Sweet Tea = Sweet Iced Tea.
How long before queers and metrosexuals start complaining about harassment when southern waitresses call them Sweetie or Honey?
liberals are all about “feelings”....hence when u confront them with FACTS...their self esteem is affected 1st!..when their position fails..they lose all their self respect... ..at that point they need counseling..but its all about "them" at that point still....but its' happened to them and they can't BELIEVE it!....... just my 2 cents of observation....
Well...if Bruce Jenner can pretend to be Caitlyn and Rachel Dolezal can pretend to be Black, I can play make believe, too. I’m a Jedi Knight because I say so! I’m a trans-terrestrial-American! /s
I know. When we order “tea” in the south we usually get sweetened iced tea. Although, sometimes we ask for unsweetened so we can sweeten it on our own.
If Obama was asked the same question, he'd ask the band to compose a piece and title it "We Northerners Are Better Than You, You Are All Incest-Committing Backwoods Hicks, Ha Ha Ha You Lost"
...but then Lincoln wished to heal the wounds between us, not let them fester.
What is a symbol of southern pride for one is a symbol of racism for another. Which is why there is no middle ground in this issue, and where there is no solution that doesn't leave one side angry.
Not a thing. They're a great band - Link
Sure there is. It's defending freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
There's no solution that appeases the perpetually angry.
Wow, learn something new every day.
