If gun sales are supposedly "red hot," why are gun manufacturers struggling, even filing for bankruptcy? The answers include a gun glut and long-term trends in gun ownership in America.
There's a continuous media mantra that gun sales are going through the roof. Well, they may have had a little boomlet after the 2012 Newtown shootings. But with Colt filing for bankruptcy, and other gun manufacturers reporting huge declines in sales and falling stock, it's clear that Americans aren't going as gun crazy as people think.
On June 15, Political Scientist Robert Spitzer of SUNY Cortland wrote the column "Why assault rifle sales are booming." It wasn't a pro-gun essay. He used arguments such as fears of Obama, the temptation of "forbidden fruit" and even the old Freudian "male sexuality" pleasure of firing a gun.

Oh, dang, that’s COLD! LOL
There you go, bringing facts to the discussion. You know the Lefties at HuffPo don’t like to do THAT!
Is it keeping good time?
I bought a Sig 24 series and it is correct to the second. ;o)
That is what you would use to clean someone’s clock? or are you referring to yours? LOL
In a business of selling products, there are two factors that gun manufacturers need to keep in mind.
1) Innovation. Find out what the public wants and make it, or better yet, make something new that the public doesn’t even know they want yet, that will become the “hot new thing”.
2) Don’t wait for market demand. Create market demand. Create more customers. A gun maker should create a superior BB gun at a low price, that should be a status “first gun” with parental supervision. Why not even have a BB gun range? Contests. If a kid gets an S&W BB gun for Christmas, they will remember the S&W label for the rest of their lives.
The majority of firearms being manufactured in the US today are pure junk, and there is a reason for that.
The US gave away its edge in machining technology and quality control to china and mexico. The chinese and mexicans now can produce better products with our knowledge, and at our expense.
Doesn’t matter though, feel free to buy all of the firearms that you like. They’re all pretty much useless if you don’t have any ammunition for them, or worse, a smaller supply than you enemy.
It all boils down to profits. The shareholders want greater returns on their investments. If the US firearms companies offshore, then profits increase.
I’ve heard this same line here on FR countless times, for countless industries.
So if you draw the line at firearms manufacturing being offshored, suck it, because the shareholder vote trumps you 2nd ammendment rights.
People here chose profits over freedom, and now you have to pay the price for that loss.
Blame it all on the bogeyman of your choice: governmemt, unions, cronies, whatever. But in the end, those industries have been lost for good, and you will most likely never get them back, because they now belong to foreign nations, and those foreign nations thank you stupid Americans for giving them the keys to the kingdom.
Colt had some years of bad management! When your CEO said that your customers needs to have background checks, you’ll get boycotted. Quality issue is another...mismanaged.
The gun safe can only fit so many.
A gun safe for each caliber should solve that one.
Dam phone and auto incorect.

We bought 2 Kimber 1911s last month. 100% American made and they are absolutely first quality. The only thing that compares to them that we own is a Colt Python.
There will always be a market for premium quality American made firearms.
