This is an excellent move. Marriage is a religious institution in which the state should play no role at all. Everything that needs to be done civilly can be handled under contract and probate law.

Marriage is a religious institution in which the state should play no role at all.

The reason why one state recognizes the marriage of someone married in another state is because of Article IV, Section 1. Take away the marriage license and you take away the Article IV protection where your marriage is concerned.

Not exactly. Marriage should be honored by the state because it is in the best interest of the state. Once marriage means everything it then means nothing. This is a good idea but it is not ideal. It is just all we have left.

Oh sorry sorry country that we have become. It is just embarrassing.

I've been saying that for a long time.

This is not only wrong, it's overwhelmingly wrong.

Tax returns. Estate tax exemptions. Social security. Veteran and military benefits for spouses. Family rates for insurance. Family discounts. Suing for wrongful death of a spouse. Obtaining insurance benefits through a partner's employer (and if the company does offer those benefits, you're taxed on them if not married). Spousal protections re 401(k) plans.

And that's only some of the protections and benefits.

They won’t do it because it will impact jobs of some government employees.
