Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, seizing the moment after the Supreme Courts landmark ruling legalizing same-sex marriage, called Friday for a Constitutional amendment that would allow the states to decide whether gay marriage should be legal.
Walkers call came shortly after the high court ruled 5-4 that same-sex couples could marry across the country, overturning a number of state same-sex marriage bans.
The ruling was a grave mistake, the Republican governor said, touting his support for amending his states constitution to protect the institution of marriage from exactly this type of judicial activism.
As a result of this decision, the only alternative left for the American people is to support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to reaffirm the ability of the states to continue to define marriage, Walker said in the statement.
Walkers statement put him directly at odds with one potential 2016 rival, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who said he didnt support pursuing a constitutional amendment.
[G]iven the quickly changing tide of public opinion on this issue, I do not believe that any attempt to amend the U.S. Constitution could possibly gain the support of three-fourths of the states or a supermajority in the U.S. Congress, Graham said in his statement. Rather than pursuing a divisive effort that would be doomed to fail, I am committing myself to ensuring the protection of religious liberties of all Americans.
Such an amendment would face steep odds on Capitol Hill.
Correction: The original version of this story said, wrongly, that Walker was calling for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between one man and one woman.
“Constitution is too darned hard to amend. A shame.”
Well, treaties are too so they created this “fast track authority”, known now as TPA. Maybe we can get this for...nevermind. Let’s just take this crap down and start over. Much easier and something we can get done in our lifetimes.
Well, at least ONE person is suggesting this. What happened to the multitude of “libertarians” who said we could just willy-nilly pass a constitutional amendment if courts went too far?
No where to be found, it seems.
The only way to seriously address the decision is by outright violation of the order.
The idea that amendments will save us is ludicrous.
It’s like the high school football team that can’t beat their crosstown rival, so they challenge to local NFL team.
If you can’t do X, how do you think you are going to do X cubed?
I like Walker but its a pointless effort.
The Gay Mafia will make sure this never comes up of a vote anywhere.
What I find most intriguing is that progressives are engaged in sawing off the branch they are sitting on.
Their power is largely based on control of the media and courts. The courts’ power derives from the Constitution, for which conservatives have immense respect.
But that devotion is not bottomless. The progressives are doing their best to destroy it, and someday they may succeed. In which case they may have a problem.
No one wants to live in a country where the government coerces people to act in opposition to their conscience. That is objectively false. Those who do the oppressing certainly want to live and control where they can. As for the controlled (the masses), they may have the ability to choose between places, but when all of the places coerce action against conscience, the best that can be done is flying under the radar. Anybody who wants to live, has to live somewhere.
Surprisingly principles stand from Walker. Wasn’t expecting it.
Piece of cake for SCOTUS. Stroke of the pen, "amended."
Never happen.
What a joke, Walker is just another political operative trying to find the best lie to fool the weak minded that supports him.
The first amendment is dead, the second amendment is regulated, the tenth amendment leaves it up to states, oops that’s ignored routinely
If the Fed Courts threaten any state or local official over "gay" marriage, the states need to arrest the judges.
Make Obama try to send in the army to enforce "gay" marriage.
Well, the Left seems to get it amended by the courts all the time.
“Meh, theyll just declare the amendment unconstitutional at this point. Laws mean nothing anymore.”
Walker is talking out his ass. How did all those votes by the people against gay marriage and illegal immigration turn out? A judge always rules for the libs and overturns the vote. The few times they rule in our favor, it magically somehow isn’t binding.
No more Don Quixote. Good call, my friend.
As a result of this decision, the only alternative left for the American people is to support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to reaffirm the ability of the states to continue to define marriage, Walker said in the statement.
...
I’m not sure an amendment will do any good. It seems like half the court doesn’t care what the Constitution, the dictionary, or any amendments say.
Please read through the link I posted to you.
or the west coast falls off face earth
Why not just have a law (signed by the next GOP president) which takes the whole issue of marriage OUT of the federal government’s reach - and then any state which wants to can do the same? It’s easier that way, as it would not require an amendment.
Yes, some tax and other laws would then have to be re-written - for example, qualifications for filing a joint return would have to be based on some other factor than marriage.
Then, whether or not a “marriage” is recognized is basically up to whatever church is asked to sanctify the marriage and whatever neighbors in the community want to consider whether they will refer to the couple living next door as married.
Isn’t that really the way it should be anyway?
Bravo Gov. Walker!
