Even as Republicans rose in a chorus of outrage Thursday over the U.S. Supreme Courts refusal to gut the unpopular Affordable Care Act, party leaders were privately breathing a sigh of relief.
Had the court gone the other way, Republicans would have faced their most serious governing challenge since taking control of both houses of Congress earlier this year.
Former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie called it a bad legal outcome, but a good political outcome for Republicans. But he added that it will increase pressure on his party to come up with a specific alternative to the law ahead of the 2016 elections.
Pollster David Winston, who advises the GOP congressional leadership, said, Ultimately, the challenge for Republicans is not just how to deal with this law, but wheres the direction? Where are the alternatives?
More than 6 million Americans most of them in conservative states would have suddenly been without the government subsidies that make health insurance affordable under the act.

Flipping vote it out then! Keep voting it out, defund it, and destroy it!
If we ever get a conservative in the WH, then it can be thoroughly destroyed.
I know I live in a dream world. Our masters have spoken and we will be punished.
Left-wing reporter activists should speak for themselves and other leftists, stick to what they actually KNOW, and stop pretending like they have any idea what is in the mind of righties. They don’t.
not by referendum....by the congress. laws can be repealed. that’s the only way to go.
Kabuki theater at its worst.
What about the millions who lost coverage when Obamacare became law? Where is their recourse?
They were the ones who planned, saved, and made good decisions for their families....but had their healthcare plans stolen from them.
Is this another example of the successful being punished for being good citizens?
did you read the part about the “specific alternative” in the quotation. What is your plan for a more popular approach than: “make everyone buy private sector health insurance so there are no systemic free-riders, subsidize it for those who can’t afford it outright, and offer medicaid to the actual poor or indigent”?
This monstrosity still has some destructive plans that are to come...and very soon. Employer mandate will affect millions more.
This is the establishment GOP that has easily folded when it came to defunding Obamacare. The last thing those cowards would want is to have to face the media and Democrats attacking them about saving all those people getting handouts.
That’s what we run on. Obama lied that you could keep your insurance. He lied that it would be less expensive. He lied that the systems it created would work efficiently. You can’t trust these Democrats.
What a sad, sad day for the country.
No, WaPo, we’re not relieved, quietly or otherwise. Maybe the RINOs you see at your cocktail parties are, but we rank-and-file are only outraged.
But what do WE matter?
“You cant trust these Democrats.”
You can’t trust the Republicans either. They’ve controlled appropriations since January 2011, yet are unwilling to use the power of the purse. They continue to approve budget deficits in the hundreds of billions of dollars. They have done absolutely nothing to slow, much less stop the Obama agenda. They are willing collaborators.
The GOP ticket in 2016 will be Bush - Fioriana. Why else would Fioriana, a failed corporate CEO and failed Senate candidate, be running?
I don’t believe that. They may be weak kneed or terrified by Obama....but they aren’t happy.
“The GOP ticket in 2016 will be Bush - Fioriana. Why else would Fioriana, a failed corporate CEO and failed Senate candidate, be running?”
Maybe she wants to add ‘failed VP candidate’ to her resume?
The minute the Republicans LET Obamacare out of committee, they lost the ability to campaign as Conservatives.
They KNOW that once it passed it would be politically impossible to remove it.
Using the “power of the purse” as you so wrongly put it, would be hilariously unpopular and result in a generation of lost elections. If you want something better, explain what it is, campaign on it, get elected and pass it.
It is no longer the Supreme Court. It is the EXTREME Court!
My own plan? BAN all “Health Insurance”. Let each person pay claims as they arise, like automobile maintenance. WATCH how FAST doctor’s fees and hospital charges would FALL. And doctors would be grateful for and POLITE to their customers, because they would not get paid if they died!
I didn’t say they would run on taking away health insurance, and I don’t think they should. They should run on how bad Obamacare is and how the Democrats lied and lied about it. Punish those who passed it, like Obama punished the GOP for the Iraq war. It doesn’t mean you have a better plan, it just means the guys who foisted it on you have to go.
