We don’t need to look for bizarre conspiracies. He turned out to be a closet liberal. No more explanation necessary. Even good presidents can saddle us with one.
A good president can even become one. Theodore Roosevelt eventually became more "progressive" than his progressive opponents. Thank God he didn't run for a second complete term.
