Lots of folks expected us to do something strange and break out in a riot. Well, they just dont know us, the Rev. Norvel Goff told the packed, multiracial congregation of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, on Sunday.
It was the first service since the horrific slaughter of nine innocent souls by a racist fanatic.
Not being a Christian, I can only marvel at the dignity and courage of the victims relatives who forgave the shooter. If I could ever manage such a thing, it would probably take me decades. It took them little more than a day.
Less shocking, but almost as uplifting, was the conduct of the broader Charleston community, which has been unified and dignified, despite the expectations of some in the media and the accused gunman, whod singled out Charleston because of its success at racial integration.
And this points to Goff being right, not just about Charleston but about the South in general.
There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation than Dixie.

I’ll tell you what, all conversation with you is done. DO NOT comment to me any further. Thank you.
That, too. What’s really fun is calling men in their late 20s “son”!
You are a true gentleman. It’s become so rare.
No more “sweeties?”
Sharks tooth ? Look up the definition for them. You won’t find the word jagged. You will find the words triangular, needle, flattened and serrated. Have a nice life.
I do so admire an honorable gentleman.
No, that’s not really the point.
Yes, as a matter of fact, that IS the point. Someone from Pennsylvania was reported to have commented, negatively, on the large number of churches in "The South". I found that comment odd (to say the least) because churches are quite numerous in "The North" (where this individual was from) as well. Having actually lived on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line, I speak to that from my own personal experience.
If you wish to comment on the (erroneous, in your opinion and maybe mine as well) theology preached in those churches, that's a wholly separate point from anything I was saying.
Uh ... you may be a little too quick on the draw there yourself.
I don't want to get into historical controversies now, but his point was that allowing the defeated to keep a few symbols to save face was a wise policy.
I wouldn't have gone with that comparison -- the "rising sun" flag with the rays is still controversial -- but his point is worth considering.
No kidding. I lived in a small town in New Jersey. The blacks lived on the south side of the creek and the whites lived on the north side. Zero integration. I went to get a fishing license and saw where it was asking for my race. I said out loud that the fish don’t give a damn what my race is and the man behind the counter told me to mark it with an “S”. I was confused and looked so. Then he filled me in. Superior.
Ah! I misunderstood. My apologies.
BTW, I largely agree with your point: that what passes for Christianity in America is often quite distorted. Prosperity Gospel and Social Justice-ism both seem to miss the point of Christianity.
Freaks some Yankees out. I met a young couple that moved to my town in middle TN from Chicago. All the hospitality they recieved made them uneasy. I’m not kidding. They eventually moved back to Chicago.
You got that right.
Really. I just look at them and say “so you are an atheist” and that usually shuts them up. One Yankee that moved to middle TN near me brought up the church thing to me but added “I don’t think they should be allowed to operate private schools”.
I politely explained the 2nd Amendment to her and said she was free to move back the the hell hole her ilk created up North that she was a refugee from. She didn’t like that. As if I cared.
I go by the attitudes of Northern refugees that move down here because they need to escape the liberal hell their cities have turned into (with their help) and then whine about our culture and way of life while wanting to change it into the same hell they left.
I doubt that is all Yankees but I’ve run across too many with that mental disease of stupidity.
We lived in Middle Tennessee for a year. My husband went to the University of Tn Space Institute at Tullahoma. In Tullahoma and Manchester, there really was a church on every corner, practically!
Our daughter went to Vacation Bible School at a Baptist church, even though we’re Catholic, and everyone was very polite. “Oh, you’re some of those evangelical Catholics,” the pastor said when we started discussing the Bible.
Most Yankees don’t know that “bless your heart” is just a polite way we Southernors say “you idiot”! lol
