Lots of folks expected us to do something strange and break out in a riot. Well, they just dont know us, the Rev. Norvel Goff told the packed, multiracial congregation of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, on Sunday.
It was the first service since the horrific slaughter of nine innocent souls by a racist fanatic.
Not being a Christian, I can only marvel at the dignity and courage of the victims relatives who forgave the shooter. If I could ever manage such a thing, it would probably take me decades. It took them little more than a day.
Less shocking, but almost as uplifting, was the conduct of the broader Charleston community, which has been unified and dignified, despite the expectations of some in the media and the accused gunman, whod singled out Charleston because of its success at racial integration.
And this points to Goff being right, not just about Charleston but about the South in general.
There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation than Dixie.

That does not surprise me in the least.
I LOVE collards.
Yes, he took cold in the chapel at Washington & Lee. Some people, I think, suspect he died of a stroke. Years ago, when I visited W&L, a docent called me “a Yankee” in a nasty way. Last year, they couldn’t have been sweeter or kinder. Beautiful campus.
Thank you very much. Raised and been in the South my whole life.
“They eventually moved back to Chicago.”
Great story.......so the plan worked! lol
I heard “your” song on the radio this morning. Barbra Streisand.
How odd.
It’s a cute song. “Yetta Tillye”
Oh, yes, it’s cute. I heard her sing it in concert several years ago.
It was on the Sirius Broadway channel.
Oh, now I understand. I couldn’t imagine it being played on the radio.
Not the “radio” radio ;-). We often listen to the Broadway channel. #3 daughter, Sally, who is 15, is something of a performer. She was in a revue with the homeschool association recently; they did Broadway and movie-musical songs.
I have Sirius but always forget to listen to it. I have at least a hundred B’way albums but only play them in the car. I don’t think I have Wholesale, though.
I try to remember to take a book on CD with me for any trip of more than 15 minutes.
