As a general matter, I agree (as did Ronald Reagan) that free trade is good for America; when we open up foreign markets, it helps American farmers, ranchers, and manufacturers. But TPA in this Congress has become enmeshed in corrupt Washington backroom deal-making, along with serious concerns that it would open up the potential for sweeping changes in our laws that trade agreements typically do not include. Since the Senate first voted on TPA, there have been two material changes. First, WikiLeaks subsequently revealed new troubling information regarding the Trade in Services Agreement, or TiSA, one of the trade deals being negotiated by Obama. Despite the administrations public assurances that it was not negotiating on immigration, several chapters of the TiSA draft posted online explicitly contained potential changes in federal immigration law. TPA would cover TiSA, and therefore these changes would presumably be subject to be fast-track. When TPA last came up for a vote, both Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL)80% and I introduced amendments that would have barred fast-track treatment for any trade agreement that attempted to impact immigration law. Two other Republican senators objected, and we were both denied votes on our amendments. Instead, the House inserted substantially weaker language in related legislation.

Then you can choose Cruz or you are a flaming hypocrite.
Cruz said he read TPP. I’ve never heard him discuss the other trade bills. His main objection is the apparent attempt to make a backroom deal on Ex-IM Bank in exchange for support on TPA. I still support an uncorrupted TPA, but that is apparently something we cannot get with the current Senate and House leadership.
A pure TPA Bill does not give the President more power. This one got corrupted by McConnell and Boehner.
I wish I knew some way to get them ousted from their positions. They are as bad as Pelosi and Reid.
The hypocrites are the fake conservatives
who support Obama, SECRECY, antiConstitutional bills,
unread bills, Obama-empowering bills, and their
supporters ... e.g. Toast Ted Cruz.
Most of us support a TPA bill that currently does not exist. Our discussion the other day was about this corrupted TPA bill. the question is do you still support this bill?
TPA passed the Senate in May with just 62 votes. They will need 60 votes for Cloture today for the new TPA bill to advance for a final vote. In May, 48 republican and 14 rat senators voted for TPA (with TAA attached).
Cruz’s change knocks that number down to 61. A lot of negative information has come out on TPA since then.
Also, there is no TAA attached to this new TPA bill. It is entirely possible that several of those 14 rat senators who voted FOR TPA before may well vote against cloture and keep the bill from advancing without TAA. With Cruz’s flip and if no other GOP senator flips from no to yes, it would only take 2 of these 14 rats to flip from yes to no today to prevent the bill from advancing for a final vote.
about time...
Jebbie?Walker?Rubio who support TPA? Cruz is excoriated and they are the standard bearers?
More importantly, it looks like McConnell also lied to Cruz, ACCORDING TO CRUZ.
It is time for our representatives to REPRESENT THE PEOPLE, and to stand up and directly confront THE PROBLEM, and call out these feckless GOP leaders BY NAME for what they are... traitorous, lying scumbags.
Thank you Jeff Sessions for setting the standard here for Ted to follow.
“Hes pulling a Rubio. For a bill during the fight then against it after it doesnt matter.”
Umm... it matters since the “final” vote hasn’t been taken yet. Voting yes the first time gave Cruz he opportunity to make constructive changes, add amendments, offer criticism. Voting no, he just becomes another whiner that Obama is for it therefore Cruz must be against it.
What really puzzles me is EVERYONE on this site knows who Cruz is and what he represents. Cruz was voting on something that every President since Roosevelt has asked for and there is no reason why this President shouldn’t be afforded the same opportunity. Cruz did what was right for the office of the President. Not for Obama. He did what was right for American industries participating in foreign trade. To bring jobs to America.
When you look at the subsequent bills that are being created once the TPA was approved and signed, that’s where there would be a big NO. Cruz already said that.
And now that the TPA has been changed, all bets are off.
This isn’t complicated.
That chart does not say that there will be no amendments allowed after TPA.
That chart does not say that the threshold for senate passage is reduced from today’s two thirds majority down to a 51 vote majority.
That chart does not indicate that power is transferred from the legislative branch to the executive.
It is not a graph intended to inform; it is a graph intended to persuade.
I’m no troll. Like a ton of us on here who would crawl over broken glass for Cruz, I’m left wondering how Sessions (for example) had it figured out but Cruz didn’t. What specifically has changed to induce Cruz to change his mind? Why were us Cruz supporters treated like we were Just for expressing disagreement? It’s still happening on this thread. We have reading comprehension problems, we are trolls, etc. that’s how the GOP-e treats conservatives.
I’m happy to wait to hear from Cruz and I trust we will bc he knows it has to be addressed. But I will not sit idly by while punk ass propaganda pushers belittle me and people like me for questioning. There are plenty of us.
Don’t expect a reply.
You won’t support him before during or after so why do you care?
Ted Cruz
Yep. On two different computers and two different browsers: Safari on the first, and Firefox on the second.
“IMO, this issue was the perfect storm and Cruz could not see the forest through the trees.”
Or he looked at the fact that every President since Roosevelt has asked for a TPA and there was no reason not to give this President the same ability to negotiate trade deals.
What’s in the trade deals is another fight, which didn’t yet take place. However, once the TPA changed, Cruz did what was right and will vote against it.
We forgave Reagan for his amnesty when he admitted the mistake.
I will be calling Rubio pronto to tell him to vote no on this.
Some agitators are still spilling misinformation. Their goal is to take Ted Cruz down. Don’t let them.
