The crisis this week involves the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and how it has handled allegations that the former president of its Spokane, Wash., chapter was a white woman who was telling people she was black. The civil rights organization found itself in the spotlight after the parents of Rachel Dolezal came forward to say their daughter was a white woman. As the controversy drew international attention, Ms. Dolezal resigned from her position, but maintained that she identified as a black woman.
The NAACP issued two statements: one before Ms. Dolezal resigned, and one after she stepped down. Focusing solely on those two statements, we asked the experts to evaluate how well the organization has handled the crisis, where it did well, where it fell short, and what it should do in its next steps as this story continues to unfold.
Andrea Bonime-Blanc, CEO of GEC Risk Advisory and author of the The Reputation Risk Handbook.: This is a complex story where there is nowhere to run or hide when information-whether correct, incorrect or in between-hits the media. The NAACP leadership was faced with a complex public and personal issue whose true nature was best captured by the statements of Eric Blauer, pastor of Jacobs Well Church in Spokane, when he stated to the Wall Street Journal that this was not a racial issue but one of integritywhether or not she lied.
The NAACPs first press release on June 12 was generally balanced in its tone, as they were absorbing the information and did not want to besmirch Ms. Dolezals reputation. In retrospect, it might have been advisable for them to state that they took the allegations seriously, were investigating facts of the situation and would issue another statement as soon as that information was obtained. The NAACP is an overtly racist organization.
Yes, they have the right to believe what they want and meet with like minded persons.
But the time has come for America to reject the NAACP’s divisive messages — for once and for all.
Blacks defense of her tells me one thing. That their incessant cries of racism are very hollow and hypocritical.
We now know where all the white women are at!
There are in Spokane!
The NAACP was caught with their pants down on this fiasco. Of course they are going to try to put the best face on this embarrassment.
To be strictly honest about this situation, I can see where the NAACP would be willing to accept this woman as a black person because of the ONE DROP OF NEGRO BLOOD rule that has existed since pre-civil war days. The rule says that if a person has one drop of black blood in their pedigree, they are considered black.
With her spray tan and her hair weave she could easily convince them that she qualified. They would be none the wiser unless they did a genealogical search of her family tree. But why would they do that? What person in their right mind would fake being black?
“...The rule says that if a person has one drop of black blood in their pedigree, they are considered black.”
Bingo, all she had to do was tell them about the blood transfusion she got when she got that bad burn from the curling iron!
In the musical Showboat, a mulatto singer is passing as white. A rival outs her and the police come to arrest her for miscegenation, sex between the races. The mulatto woman’s white boyfriend secretly pricks his finger with hers and swears to the cops, I have Negro blood in me.
I get the picture.
Being technical again, I guess if blood COULD actually be transferred in that fashion, it would only go in one direction; FROM the person with higher blood pressure, TO the one with the lower; and THAT’s a stretch.
