A record 21.7 million American kids get free or reduced-price lunch during at school. But when summer vacation starts, the vast majority of them go without this essential, federally funded benefit. Fewer than 4 million kids -- or just 18% of those in the school lunch program -- are fed through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's summer food program. While that's a record number for the 40-year-old initiative, many advocates and government officials say more needs to be done. "In the summer, when those school meals disappear, children find themselves hungry and with few options," said Duke Storen, a senior director at Share Our Strength, which aims to end child hunger. "It impacts their health and well-being and contributes to learning loss."

In addition, if school is not in session these are not ‘school meals.’
They are simply government dependence programs operating out of familiar buildings.
Has anyone asked the taxpayers how they feel about paying for heat, light, water, HVAC, cleaning supplies, etc. in these schools when classrooms are otherwise empty?
IF the PARENTS can’t FEED their OWN kids, then the kids need to be up for ADOPTION!!! PERIOD!!! CHILD NEGLECT when parents that are on WELFARE don’t feed their kids!!!!
Oh PLEASE....they can feed them fine.....MAYNE they don’t WANT TO because they are on drugs!!! TAKE THE KIDS AWAY!!
NO ONE is going hungry is this country....NO ONE!!!
Those millions of hungry kids could learn to plant a garden if they have any arable land. They could also learn to fish. But I guess if they can’t get it out of the cupboard it’s too much work.
Exactly! The only hungry kids in the US are ones whose parents are negligent. Some people sell their food stamps for drugs. Even considering that, how many different food programs do we have? Besides food stamps, food supplied at school and over the summer, food pantries, churches, etc., how can anyone in this country be hungry? The only ones I can imagine are those on the streets who are addicts or have mental health problems.
If only we didn’t have so many deodorant choices...
seems like this would be a great thing with the epidemic of childhood obesity...
Of course not!
That’s really good of the district, hopefully other places can step up like that and help as well!
Today, kids are starving.
Tomorrow, the US has a obesity problem particularly with young children???
Which is it , media???
If they’re going hungry, it means their parents are snatching the food out of their hands.
Yes....on stilts.
BS. Correct.
This is a lever to introduce year-round brainwash and control of the useful-idiot training centers. The more chaos they foment, the more they successfully lobby for their responsibility. ..OUR responsibility to...ah....do something. Old story. New script. Give us your money and children. Bigger picture. Job creation. Programmable voters. The ‘party’. SOSDD.
We used to do that until 1965 when Teddy Kennedy had a bill passed, which stated it was against the woman’s civil rights to bear another. The very morning this bill passed a woman and her 5 children burned to death hiding in a
closet from the fire engulfing their house. This was in Orlando, Florida. Now we are feeding children whose mother or sperm donor could care less if the child was fed or not. It’s the taxpayers problem. A lot of the mothers are not over 15 or 16 years old.
Then, find out who these kids are, and arrest their parents for child abuse!
I don’t doubt that enormous numbers of “parents” have no interest in feeding their own children. However, are these children starving? If so, I want to see proof. All I see are obese welfare and food stamp recipients. They’re getting food from somewhere. HEY! WHAT HAPPENED TO MY PAYCHECK?
not true
Then demand an accounting of the parent’s WIC and SNAP funds.
Take the children away from the parents who get that money and don’t use it to feed their children.
Government dependency breeds stupidity.
