The American flag was lowered to half-staff at the South Carolina state capitol last week after the deadly church shooting in Charleston, yet the Confederate "battle flag" still flies on the state capitol grounds, outraging South Carolinians and other Americans.
Local politicians and leaders held a joint news conference this morning to call for the Confederate flag, currently flying, by law, at full-staff, to be to be removed entirely from the site, and Gov. Nikki Haley is expected to make a statement on the issue this afternoon.
But though the controversy is focused this week on South Carolina, it is not the only state to have the remnants of the Confederacy in its state symbol.
The Georgia state flag isn't what most Americans commonly recognize as the Confederate flag, but it is is actually based on an earlier version.
That earlier version prominently featured the "Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia," which is the commonly recognized version of the Confederate flag.
The current version was adopted in 2003 after two years of debate over the specifics of the flag, as described in "The New Georgia Encyclopedia". The flag used today is based on the first national flag of the Confederacy (dubbed the "Stars and Bars"), with the Georgia state seal inside the circle of stars and "In God We Trust" written below.
"This legacy did not go unnoticed by African American legislators and others -- but most expressed a willingness to allow this tribute because they did not see it as a symbol widely associated with racist groups," reads "The New Georgia Encyclopedia," which is run through a partnership with groups including the governor's office and the University of Georgia Press.

To half-staff the Dixie flag in mourning would have been a fit move given the political tensions over it. That kind of looked like a faux pas not to.
It wasn’t freshly designed for the Confederacy, though.

The liberal democrats are rabid and foaming at the mouth trying to denigrate EVERY southerner especially if they are conservative...
I have a Nephew who used to have a “Florida Native” tag on the front of his car. Now he has Florida ancestors going back to at least the 1700s but he was born in Illinois. His Father was also born in Illinois. I thought it was funny.
They ought to remember what “conservative” looked like when that meant Democrat.
It was to stick in the mud over some things that are not to be proud of.
Well, frankly, for most of this country’s history, people used to self-identify by the state they were from, rather than through a national lens. You were a Texan, a Virginian, a Kansan, etc.
I’m finding it more and more preferable, as the all-encompassing “America” is becoming a country is transforming into something I’d not particularly desire to associate myself with.
And what about that Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park which has been very popular since the 1960s?

So, how is Tennessee’s flag tied to this? The article seems to just lump it in because it’s a Southern state whose flag uses red, white and blue and stars. Gee, what a coincidence. Guilt by association if I’ve ever seen it!
There must be a racist remark from some out there some where. An all white flag would be apropos po. It does signify ‘surrender’.

I hate to be the one to tell you they already got the GA flag. But we can fly the confederate flag at our house all day long and we plan to have it proudly displayed at our July 4th deck party along with the Gadsden.
