Yeah, the confederates were so concerned for "states rights" that they used the federal government to force northern states where slavery was illegal to give them back escaped slaves, overthrew the lawfully elected Governor of Texas when he wouldn't take an oath to support the confederacy (pointing out that Texas never voted to join the confederacy, but merely to leave the union), and wrote a "Confederate Constitution" that protected slavery as an eternal "right" but placed further restrictions on states that HADN'T been part of the U.S. Constitution.
But don't let historic facts get in the way of your Lincoln hate.
