Billionaire Donald Trump, a Republican, announced his bid for the presidency with Neil Youngs Rockin in the Free World blasting in the background, and once again a political candidate has associated himself with a rock star without the endorsement of said star.
Donald Trump was not authorized to use Rockin' in the Free World in his presidential candidacy announcement, Young, 69, told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday through his longtime manager, Elliot Roberts. Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for president of the United States of America, referring to the U.S. senator from Vermont who is vying for the Democratic nomination in 2016.

They all do this. Why on EARTH do these idiots not get the rights to a song? People own those rights. Pay for them.
I am so sick and tired of this BS from these prima donna former rock stars with Republicans using a bit of their music. Like anyone identifies them with these candidates. Like anyone even thinks about them at all anymore.
Neil jumped the shark many harvest moons ago.
I hope Neil Young will remember: a southern man don’t need him ‘round, anyhow.
So he’s admitting he votes here illegally?
As obama had taught us
Just ignore the laws you don’t like...
Not crazy about Trump, but since when does that commie POS, Neil Young, give a crap about the “free world”? During the Vietnam War he ran around with “Hanoi Jane” Fonda and others of the kind, undermining troop morale and supporting the enemy.
FUNY
Ha! Got your attention, has-been hippy!
If they use more than a certain portion of the song, they do have to pay. Once a musician publishes the song he’s entitled to royalties when people use it. Those are collected by ASCAP and BMI. He does not get to say who can use it, and they don’t have to get permission to do so. Chill out Neil and take the money.
SNAP!
Don’t confuse this with failing to pay for rights. It’s very rare that you have to actually ask the artist for permission to use their work. If you want to use it in a movie, tv commercial, or something like that where it is incorporated into another work, then you have to ask permission.
If you want to play it on the radio, in your bar, at your party or public event? Then you just have to pay the license fees to ASCAP, BMI, or whoever. You don’t have to actually get permission from the artist. These lefties are just mad they can’t stop right wing politicians from using their music, so they release these statements.
My guess is that they do get the rights, which in many, if not most, cases the artists do not control and the artists feel like they need to vent when the songs are used in a manner they do not approve.
Have a few more hits of weed, Neil. And while you’re at it, get yourself a few new pairs of jeans, would ya?
How do we know the Trump campaign didn’t buy a license?
If the Trump campaign paid the mechanical liscense for the use of the song, there is nothing that Young can do....except get his name in the news by complaining.
Neil young sucks. And has always sucked.
Heart became dead to me after they yelled at McLame for playing baracuda.
I’m surprised Trump used that because the song is about homeless people. Trump is a real estate developer. Homeless people? What? What was he trying to say with that? He wants to give them housing?
