KOKOMO, Ind. - Police in Kokomo are investigating the fatal shooting of a robbery suspect by a police officer at a gas station southeast of the city.
Police say a ten-year veteran of the Kokomo Police Department responded to the report of an armed robbery at the Casey's General Store at Dixon Road and Defenbaugh Street around 5:30 p.m. Friday. The officer got to the scene to find a female suspect pointing a handgun at the store clerk.
The officer ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, at which point, the woman pointed the gun at the officer. The officer fired shots, striking the suspect.
The officer then called for medical assistance for the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect's name is being withheld, pending notification of family members. The officer involved in the shooting also has not been identified.
No one else was reported injured at the scene.

UPDATE:
Kokomo officer involved in Friday night shooting identified
KOKOMO, Ind. - Kokomo police have released the name of the officer involved in Friday night's deadly shooting.
Our newsgathering partners at The Kokomo Tribune report Roy Smith is a 10-year veteran officer.
Police say he shot a 17-year-old girl who was pointing a gun at a gas station clerk during an attempted robbery. This happened inside Casey's General Store on Dixon Road.
The teenager's name has not been released.
Investigators say her weapon was later determined to be a type of air gun.
The Howard County prosecutor will now review the case.
Police shootings in Kokomo are extremely rare, and this is quite possibly the first time this officer has ever fired his gun at a suspect.
Sad situation for the cop, who is no doubt regretting having been put in that situation.
Was the perp wearing a bikini? Did she just come from a pool party in TX? !
We need to ban air guns.
You seem confused, as I’ve never seen anyone here claim a suspect being shot to death while holding a gun on some low wage clerk was a bad shoot.
Never.
If yea see someone doing this, ping me.
There will be no problem if the dead girl is white. Nobody will care.
I thought Kokomo was where you went to get away from it all.
The only thing we can know for sure is that the unarmed black teen was innocent.
If the cop had a body camera, it will just be icing on the cake to the store video.
Well, one fewer “gimmee dat!” in the world.
Ha. Good one.
I have read and reread both
your post and digger 48’s
post. Maybe you should review
post #1 or let me know what I
am missing. Humor?
The officer was not identified. While I’m not against that in principle, especially right after the incident, when I see that in the press, I have to assume the officer was not a white male. My guess is a female, race irrelevant as to influencing the decision to withhold identity.
The only one who's "right on cue" is you with this hysterical cop defense post. No one is calling this a bad shoot, at least on FR. If you've got other references, name them. But save your pre-emptive attack on people who want to know the details. If the shoot was good, Freepers support it. This isn't DU.
She just did.
True. He at least has a store clerk still alive because of him—and likely eternally grateful for his rescue.
Lots of Amish around Kokomo.
The Lone Ranger could shoot from the hip and knock a gun out of an outlaw's hand. We should expect no less from our police officers.
Lots of meth heads in and around Kokomo. 50/50 the suspect could be of any race. I’m thinking a stupid white meth head from a decent family who stole her brother’s B.B. gun to rob the place. She was in too deep and out of her league.
