New government research shows that female military veterans commit suicide at nearly six times the rate of other women, a startling finding that experts say poses disturbing questions about the backgrounds and experiences of women who serve in the armed forces.
Their suicide rate is so high that it approaches that of male veterans, a finding that surprised researchers because men generally are far more likely than women to commit suicide.
"It's staggering," said Dr. Matthew Miller, an epidemiologist and suicide expert at Northeastern University who was not involved in the research. "We have to come to grips with why the rates are so obscenely high."
Though suicide has become a major issue for the military over the last decade, most research by the Pentagon and the Veterans Affairs Department has focused on men, who account for more than 90 percent of the nation's 22 million former troops. Little has been known about female veteran suicide.

Most female soldiers I ever knew were not lesbian. However, the lesbian rate of suicide is very high, and I suspect there were many lesbians, even though they were no where near a majority. With such a high rate, though, of suicide and with more lesbians probably than the general population, and with a limited number of female veterans, it wouldn’t take many numbers of a high risk group to raise the overall suicide rate.
“Experts” find whatever they’re talking about “staggering”. Not to dismiss the seriousness of vet suicides, but hangers-on like this guy are just looking for attention.
So what percentages of these warriors down through history were women? How many American women have been actual combat troops in the last 200 years? The USSR used women in combat in WW2, but that was mostly a function of their desperation and communist disdain for their own subject’s lives.

Through the military they become more comfortable with killing in general, and thus become as likely to kill themselves as men.
I have been trying to read up on exactly this topic. The VA is trying to help but they are just too few trying to help. I lost my best friend to suicide when we got home from the first war in the gulf.

would you ask that about male veterans?....if they were homosexual?.....
well maybe just maybe men aren’t meant to be warriors either since they commit suicide in greater numbers than the women....

Yes, I would. Homosexuals in general, of either gender, are terribly flawed individuals and have a higher suicide rate than heteros.
can people just give these women a nod and a thankyou for serving in the military, although I'm sure a number of freepers would rather have the girls stay out of the military and work at Hooters instead....
besides, if men veterans commit suicide more often than women, shouldn't we be questioning the men's ability?...
