Sensing his free trade agenda was hours from a stunning defeat, President Barack Obama visited Capitol Hill in person on Friday morning to make a personal plea for his own party's support.
Democrats ignored him.
And now, the prospects for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the biggest free trade deal in history, to be finalized and adopted are grim, unless Republicans can find a way within days to revive the bills and rescue Obama's biggest second-term legislative priority.
The House overwhelmingly rejected the first in a series of trade bills Friday, with Democrats voting against a program that aids displaced workers in large part because, under the chamber's procedures, its defeat meant the vote on the so-called "fast track" bill that followed was only symbolic, so the measure couldn't be sent to Obama's desk.
The vote provided the clearest evidence yet that, with 19 months left in his presidency, Obama's pulpit is less bully than it's ever been before.
It also showcased the strength of populist elements of both parties, who beat back an intense lobbying push from traditional Washington forces like the Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers.
Friday's vote doesn't mean the package of trade bills are dead. House Republican leaders have called for re-votes by Tuesday, buying Obama a little more time to lobby his own party, and GOP leaders time to twist arms.

Democrats ignored him.

Too bad Republicans won’t do the same.
Boehner is a traitor.
Democrats not only rejected Obama, but rejected Bonehead, McConnell
and Ryan...RINOs all.
Guarantee next week we’ll hear about Republican’s plans to save Obama.
Did I hear correctly that Bonehead will try to get this through again beginning monday. What part of it was an overwhelming defeat does that two faced jackel jerk not understand. Move on to something important and you can handle Bonehead like naming a post office.
Yep....just as I have been saying: “They will say anything to get a seat in the House or Senate and tell us what WE want to hear, and then when they get there, they drink the D.C. Kool-Aid” None of ‘em are any good that I can see....
....... and GOP leaders time to twist arms.

Sickening.
When one is being bribed with big bucks from the amnesty pimps and
Chamber of Commies, one has to try to deliver.
If only Bonehead had fought this hard fro the grass roots.
Gee, does this mean that all of the Democrats who voted against this bill did so because they are mean, evil racists who don’t want to see a black President succeed?
It’s enough to make you wonder if we are Republicans or Democrats anymore.. I guess all I can say now is that I’m a CONSERVATIVE.
I say vote NO, NO, NO.
His Highness is not pleased.
Maybe Obama, McConnell, Bonehead, Ryan and Cruz can cry on each
others shoulders.
Let me remind you that the GOP leadership tried to ram this bill thru
like they did the Cromibus.
Don't worry. They will find a way.
Yes, nobody could be that weak. There has to be another explanation. He is a weasel of the worst kind.
Kool Aid isn’t the only thing Boehner drinks - I think he is an alcoholic.

The problem is the House Rules that give dictatorial power to a very few of the 435 people who are supposed to be “equals.” And the Senate Rules are even more arcane.
Obamatrade aka the TransPacific Parthership (TPP) is misleadingly called a trade agreement. But only two of its 26 chapters actually cover trade issues such as tariffs and quotas. Obamatrade is really an expansive system of enforceable global government that the Obama administration is negotiating with eleven Pacific Rim nations: Vietnam, Brunei, Singapore, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Canada, Mexico and Peru. Obamatrade would impose one-size-fits all international rules to which U.S. federal, state and local law would be forced to conform. It would also give preferential treatment to foreign banks and other firms operating here, exempting foreign companies in the US from financial, environmental and land use regulations that US businesses would still be required to obey. Obamatrade would subject the U.S. to the jurisdiction of two systems of foreign tribunals, including World Bank and United Nations tribunals. These foreign tribunals would be empowered to order payment of U.S. tax dollars to foreign firms if U.S. laws undermined the foreign firms new special privileges.
