Cruz: TPA Doesn’t Give Obama More Power, Jeff Sessions ‘Not Accurate’ On TPP
Breitbard ^ | 06/12/2015 | Ian Hanchett

Posted on 06/12/2015 12:41:58 PM PDT by SoConPubbie

Texas Senator and GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) argued Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) “is not giving the president more authority” and that Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) is “not accurate” in some of his claims regarding the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on Friday’s broadcast of “The Kuhner Report” on Boston’s WRKO.

Cruz argued that he had been the staunchest opponent of President Barack Obama in Congress. He then separated TPA (Trade Promotion Authority) and the TPP (the Trans-Pacific Partnership). He touched on TPA first, stating that “history has demonstrated, the only way to get a trade agreement adopted is with fast-track. Since FDR, consistently, for 80 years, presidents in both parties have had fast-track. Anytime fast-track has lapsed, trade agreements don’t get negotiated.” He later added that it was a “misunderstanding” to say TPA gave away the Senate’s treaty power. Cruz stated that “Under the Constitution, there are two ways to make binding law. Number one, you can pass a treaty ratified by 2/3ds of the Senate. Or number two, you can pass legislation passed by a majority of both of houses of Congress and signed by the president. … TPA uses the second constitutional path.” And “it’s been long recognized that the Constitution’s Origination Clause applies to trade bills, which means the House of Representatives has to be involved. There’s a reason why trade bills have historically not been done as treaties, because the Constitution says that anything concerning the raising of revenues, and trade bills concern tariffs, which are the raising of revenues, has to originate in the House of Representatives. So, the process of approving a trade agreement through both houses of Congress has been the way it has been done for roughly a century. And it is not giving the president more authority.”

Regarding TPP, Cruz said

"Ted Cruz is not Jesus Christ. And even though he’s one of my favorite presidents, neither was Reagan. People need to get a grip and stop worshipping people."

I agree with you, but I haven't seen any worshipping of Cruz. What I do see is legitimate dismay that we have the best candidate since Reagan, and it looks like we're going to let him get away from us. If so, we deserve to lose.

I would say people need to get a grip, also. They need to stop emoting all over the place as though they got dumped by their girlfriends just because they disagree with a politician.

If you and your kind are successful, you will have Clinton or Bush as the president. Likely Clinton..... - enjoy.

What is sad about it?

That you don't have a problem with it.

People that stupid deserve Bush/Clinton.

Every legitimate candidate in the race has supported and even gone overseas to lobby for it but either haven’t been questioned about it or have conveniently changed their opinion. So Ted Cruz is the “traitor” and Nancy Pelosi is a hero.

Now I see they’ve moved on to new targets like Steve King who supported it “just because he wants to sell corn overseas”. So apparently trade deals to sell American products overseas are also bad.

I don’t have a problem with fast track trade authority.

I don’t see why a president shouldn’t be able to exclusively negotiate trade deals with another leader.

I’d prefer Obama not have this power to be perfectly honest, but an honest person who loves America? I don’t see a problem with that.

At this point in time, it looks like the GOP wants to pass this authority for Obama and quite possibly then Hillary, because the GOP is alienating its base to such an extent that I think they are likely to suffer huge losses.

My preference is let’s wait until Mr. Fundamental Change is l’histoire, and see who the next president is, and go from there.

I don’t see why we absolutely have to have it in the next 17 months.

I’m sure you think you are right and all of us are wrong.

The problem is all the facts are on our side and only vague denials and ignoring the facts are the only thing you offer in response..... because you are wrong.

Some of these folks are getting very ugly and I expect it to get even worse for a while. I just keep thinking, “don’t let the bastards wear you down”.

There truly isn’t anyone else for me to vote for, Cruz is it.

I am not your enemy. We are allies with different lines in the sand. My concerns are the destruction of America through immigration, jihadists and an executive/government with unbridled power. Those are bright lines that I will not cross but I don’t consider you an enemy. If I gave that impression I apologize.

And you can stand with the kenyan and his new best pal & enabler Ted Cruz. Cruz’s credibility is GONE. Sorry, Friend. Hurts me to type this. I was all in with the Cruzinator but this is a game changer. Ted Cruz must be completely reassessed and is no way worthy of being put on a pedestal any longer.
