Ted Cruz to visit McAllen for $1,000-per-person fundraiser

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz — collecting cash for his fledgling presidential campaign — will visit McAllen on Tuesday for a $1,000-per-person fundraiser at the International Museum of Art and Science.

Invitations mailed to prospective donors list two options: a $2,500-per-person VIP reception at 6 p.m. and a $1,000-per-person fundraiser from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Local anesthesiologist Dr. Lawrence Gelman organized the fundraiser with Cruz’s campaign team.

“It’s very nice of him to come down to the Rio Grande Valley,” said Gelman, the former CEO at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. “And I think I’m not alone in feeling the Valley is underrepresented at the state and the federal level. People think about Dallas and San Antonio and Houston, and we’re kind of forgotten about.”

The Cruz campaign couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.

An ardent conservative, Gelman hosted a Saturday morning talk show on KURV-AM and regularly makes hefty contributions to Republican candidates.

Gelman donated $10,800 to Cruz on March 27, according to Federal Election Commission records.

While he hasn't met Cruz, Gelman said he respects the senator’s conservative principles and commitment to the Constitution.

“Then again, I never met Reagan either,” Gelman said.

Cruz plans to meet with donors at the “Sacred Visions” exhibit.

Loaned to the museum by Gelman and his wife, Esperanza, the collection includes 20 stained glass windows with biblical imagery.

I believe Diogenes is a Walker supporter.

I guess he can get behind a man who doles out $975 million tax dollars through an agency he created and Chaired and for that amount of money Wisconsin has Lost over 7,000 jobs. Yep, that’s minus 7,000 jobs through WEDC. But that’s O.K., because Walker’s donors got 60% of that money. Those donors own companies that have outsourced thousands of Wisconsin jobs overseas.

This matter has just been turned over to prosecutors for further investigation. Meanwhile, Walker bills himself as being on the side of the American Worker.

Wisconsin is now 40th in job creation and last nationwide in new business startups.

Yes, and he flip flopped on immigration and, of course, he stridently supported the Patriot Act.

But, the Walkerbots won’t admit these things when they do hatchet jobs on Cruz.
