Ted Cruz team looks beyond Iowa, New Hampshire
Politico ^ | 06/10/2015 | Katie Glueck

He’s stuck in the middle of the pack in Iowa, lags in polls, and much of the GOP donor class views him with disdain.

But Ted Cruz is embracing a novel strategy for winning the nomination: He’s lowering expectations in the early states while investing in later-voting states that hardly see a candidate before March.

In the past week or so alone, the Texas senator has taken his presidential campaign to Michigan and Massachusetts, staffed up in New Jersey and Tennessee, and skipped an Iowa cattle call to stump in North Carolina — all states expected to vote in March, with the exception of New Jersey, which has a primary slated for June 2016.

It’s a risky bet that defies the usual wisdom — and historical precedent — that a candidate must achieve an early-state victory to stay in the game. But Cruz’s team is bracing for a long fight based on picking up delegates — a battle they plan to stretch all the way to the convention, where, the theory goes, he’ll be the last conservative standing — though a contested convention hasn’t happened in nearly 40 years.

“Our strategy is taking it to the convention, which is why you’ve seen us announcing chairmen in California and New Jersey, as well as Iowa and New Hampshire,” said Mark Campbell, Cruz’s political director. “There are 2,470 [delegates] total, and you need 1,236 of them to win. None of these can be accumulated at any one time, which is why it’s a marathon more than a sprint. So we are methodically going state by state, focusing on grass roots and party activists.”

Campbell said they expect Cruz to place “in the top three” in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

I worked for a major bank for twenty-five years.

I guess I am a bad person.

Depends on what you did. I'll let you decide. Welcome to Free Republic.

Are you suggesting that someone who is running in this election “did” provably something wrong, illegal, unethical?

There’s nothing wrong with being a banker. Some of my best friends are bankers.

“And much of the GOP donor class views him with disdain”

Well that hasn’t stopped Ted Cruz friends from raising more money and from more individual donors in his first week than any GOP candidate in history, including Mitt Romney. Nor has it stopped the Cruz SuperPAC’s from raising unprecedented amounts in record time. The author of the article is striving mightily to construct a narrative that doesn’t exist in real-life. Is Politico the new Salon?

You didn't get it. "Welcome to Free Republic" means that I have judged. for my own purposes, that I know what you are. I'm pretty good at it after 17+ years. Troll someone else.

I agree they are trying mightily to peel off Cruz support. I think he is wrong on the trade bill and legal immigration, but at this point these are not deal breakers and he is head and shoulders above the remaining candidates, save maybe Walker who would get my vote.

Don’t be fooled by my start date. Dealing with people all my life, I know what you are, too.

Thanks for the welcome and goodbye.
Have a nice day.

Hahahaha! We’re at over $100 million between the PACs and the campaign. Who writes this nonsense?!

The only reason Lindsey-girl Graham is in the running is to undercut Ted Cruz in South Carolina. Graham has never met a war or an illegal alien that he doesn’t like.

If Ted is so strong, nobody should be able to stand in his way. If Ted lets Linda beat him then he wasn’t strong to begin with and shouldn’t win.

lol. Too funny. I guess you are beginning the 7 stages of grief. I guess you are at the beginning. I never thought I would see a Cruz guy give the pity party excuse at least not this early. The Governors have it so easy.....yeah right. They actually have to work and not just work on policy. Cute post I must admit.

So Walker passed his half assed RTW all by his lonesome?

I guess the legislature forced him to support common core before he decided to oppose it.

Excuses.....Walker didn’t have to vote. He could have vetoed anything in front of him. Sorry but Walker is the strongest candidate we have had since 1980. He is doing excellent and hasn’t even announced yet. I have a feeling Walker will be overwhelmingly popular when he does announce. Of course the reason he has not announced yet is because he is still working for the state. Some get to vacation around the country practically the whole year....and even miss work on a vote day to go party.....talk about the life.

Oh I have more than enough stones to name my candidate.

My candidate is NOBODY. You see NOBODY tells the truth, NOBODY sicks up for the middle class, and NOBODY isn’t a bought and paid for shill for the uniparty.

NOBODY is the best choice in 2016.

So strong in fact that he ran to the USCOC as his first port of call, hired multiple Romney staff and about a dozen other leftist moves in recent memory.

You have a pretty liberal take on Cruz. Which is nothing new. You have a liberal take on a lot of things.

Looks like there are a few more “so disappointed” people out there.
Hope this trade bill works for you.
