'True, football, or soccer as it is known here, is not as central to American as it is to European, African or South and Central American life. Nowhere near.
Up until recently, the game has been unloved by the major US television networks, which have long bemoaned the lack of breaks in play, the paucity of goals and the glut of draws.
Absent from the US game are big-name male stars and big-name clubs. The New York Red Bulls will never rival the New York Yankees. Real Salt Lake pales, rather risibly, alongside Real Madrid.
However, football is no longer met with American indifference. Nor any more does it offer proof of America's sporting isolationism.'

I swear, you are such a fairy.
LOL
ooh get you.
Yesterday, I turned to my husband and asked: Can you give me a thumbnail description of Babe Ruth’s accomplishments to somebody who just thinks he’s fat?
He screamed: You say nothing to a moron like that!
Seemed to say it all...
Actually I am more read on Ruth than most Brits. I KNOW he was a superlative player and arguably without him, baseball would never have exploded.
Remember this is all good natured banter.
It is?
And quit this crap that you’re more well read than any American. You pull this stuff all the time. If all you have to go on is Free Republic, you’re amazingly parochial.
Misread this. Apparently, scotsman is more well read than most Brits. I doubt that to but should have read more closely.
Read my 146 response. I sent it to the wrong Scotsman. Will he be surprised! For some reason, it’s refusing to let me use a lower case “s”.
I did actually live in the US (happy days), 2004-05, Florida.
Yes, I am, then again, in the land of the blind.......
If it’s so blind and dumb, why do you continue to post here? There are hundreds of other American sites you can drop your pearls of wisdom. Or better yet, you’d probably fit in better with Comments are Free over at The Guardian.
Except for major international matches like the World Cup, the TV ratings for soccer have almost reached the level of MSNBC (and I suspect that soccer and MSNBC share the same core audience).
Any further questions???
I meant BRITAIN as the land of the blind!.
Sheesh.
First, here is a succinct primer on the game of Rugby (Union): http://www.artofmanliness.com/2009/03/10/rugby-basics/
Second, I can assure you that there are dozens of set plays in rugby that may not be apparent to rugby novices because there are no timeouts (except for serious injuries and half-time) and the set plays often called while play is in motion. The are a multitude of set plays whenever the ball is put back into play after a stop in the action (i.e., kick-offs, penalty kicks, line-outs, and scrums). There are also set plays off of rucks, mauls, kicks, and tackles, all of which occur when the ball is in play. Watch a few videos of Johnny Sexton, who is arguably the greatest fly-half (No, 10) to play the game for Ireland and beyond. (The fly-half is roughly the equivalent of the quarterback in American football.) Much of what you will see are set plays with a touch of improvisation to cover the “what if” situation. Here are some examples:

Third,(and I say this with tongue in cheek — sort of), the average American football player can't even spell “Alabama” or “Florida” let alone play an entire game without a stoppage after each down and an insufferable number of timeouts so that someone smarter can tell them what to do.
Interesting. Thanks!
My pleasure!
Concussions will bring the end to American football.
