Bad News for the GOP: Americans Have Become More Socially Liberal
BernardGoldberg.com ^ | May 28, 2015 | Bernard Goldberg

A new Gallup Poll says that on social issues, Americans are moving left. They’re becoming more liberal. This has huge political implications – implications not good for the Republican Party.

Americans find all sorts of social issues more “morally acceptable” today than they did at the turn of this century. In 2001, 40 percent of Americans supported gay rights; today it’s 63 percent.

On sex between an unmarried man and a woman, in 2001, 53 percent approved; today it’s 68 percent.

Even on a hot button issue like medical research using stem cells obtained from human embryos, more Americans approve today than they used to. In 2001, 52 percent approved; now it’s 64 percent.

On social issues only five percent of those polled said they are “very conservative.”

So if only five percent of the voters are “very conservative” on social issues, does the Republican Party really want to pick the most socially conservative candidate to run for president?

Do the candidates really want to show that they’re more conservative than the next guy?

But if the party picks a moderate, the true blue conservative purists will sit home on Election Day. That’s what happened when both McCain and Romney were the party’s nominees. The suicide wing didn’t vote.

I’m sure Republicans don’t think about it this way, but Barack Obama’s coalition consisted of blacks, Latinos, single women, union members, academics and … angry conservatives. When the conservative purists stay home on Election Day, it’s a vote for the liberal Democrat.

Conclusion: Republicans have a problem.

On top of all this there’s the Electoral College, which helps the Democrats. The election is still more than a year off, but it’s a safe bet right now that Hillary will win New York State, California, Illinois, Washington State, Oregon, Minnesota, Vermont, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Massachusetts. Pick up only a few more here and there, and it’ll be time for the coronation.

There is one ray of sunshine for the GOP: Polls show that most Americans don’t think Mrs. Clinton is trustworthy. And – I know this is highly subjective – but she’s not especially likeable either. Except when Richard Nixon beat Hubert Humphrey, the more likable candidate has won every modern day election. (Many conservatives will never acknowledge that Mr. Obama was or is likable in any way. A majority of voters may disagree, though his race was a major factor, at least in his first victory.)

So it probably would be a good idea if the Republicans pick someone who doesn’t scare the kids and the dogs. I can name a few who do, but you know who they are.

If they pick a “very conservative” candidate, the people who watch Fox News and listen to Rush Limbaugh will be pleased. But the euphoria will fade when Hillary Clinton is sworn in as president.

Bernard seems to not know if he’s Goldberg or Sanders today.

I’ve also been informed that I’m more accepting of gay marriage. LOL

All according to a leftist / liberal press and poll taker. No surprise. At all.

Americans will believe whatever point of view offers the most convincing argument.

Right now they're hearing only one side.

And when did Gallup last have any credibility?

"Barack Obama’s coalition consisted of blacks, Latinos, single women, union members, academics..."

What about transgender and homsexuals? How could he leave them off the list. Isn't that about 20% of the population these days? /sarc.

Yup! They DO like their tattoos and facial hardware. :)

Going out to eat, if the waiter/waitress has tattoos and facial hardware... they minimize their tip.

That’s just how I feel about it.

The RATS have used Todd Akin’s idiotic attempts to prove himself smart over and over..they will continue to do so because it works for them and against conservatives.

Sometimes we are our own worst enemies.

This summer, ABC Family will premiere Becoming Us, an unscripted show that chronicles the life of 17-year-old Ben Lehwald of Evanston, Illinois, as his father Charlie transitions to become Carly.

Thanks, but No Thanks !

The issue is framing of the issues. Bernie does not understand that most people are not educated enough to answer questions the way they were framed 10 - 20 years ago. If you ask someone, should gay people be allow to marry, the answer is yes. If you ask, should Churches be force to marry gay people, the answer is no.

Same for economics. Ask young people if they approve of socialism the answer is yes. This is because socialism sounds so good- being social. But ask if the government should pick winners and loser is the market- the answer is no.

Conclusion: Republicans have a problem.

Yes, they most certainly do. But it isn't the promulgation by media that 'Americans' by and large endorse buggery and all manner of perversion. Rather it is the intimidation of the disbelievers that have prompted them to retreat with their opinions to the ballot.

Those establishment Republicans like Jeb Bush and Graham who believe their mercenary consultants and CoC and crony business will find out soon. Mitt purportedly lost because conservatives stayed out by the millions. What is coming for them, if Jeb succeeds in betraying all of us and out maneuvering conservatives to win the nomination, is very real and they will find out. We don't vote for him or any other RINO, period.

News flash for ya Mr. Goldberg: The problem with Republicans is this: they simply don’t play to win. They play not to get hurt; they play not to lose. That’s why they lose elections and their support continues to erode.

The GOP, and their propaganda arm FOX, have gone all in this time with LGBT and other perversions, abortion, and little or no respect of the Constitution. And guess what? The left will still run roughshod over them, they’ll cower in fear, and they’ll STILL lose yet another election.

That is, unless conservatives move aggressively to change all that.

Thank the education system for this. During my 30+ years of university teaching, I was pretty much alone in trying to get a conservative viewpoint expressed. The current class warfare Obozo is pushing is a case in point. Despite centuries of failed Socialistic attempts, from New Harmony to Auroville, all failed for the same reason: People are not imbued with equal talents and, hence, cannot be rewarded equally in the long run.

Still, the GOP is virtually mute when it comes to telling people the advantages of conservative politics. We need a communicator, a la Reagan and Friedman, to get the message out. The current GOP leadership is an embarrassment.

Where would one go, outside of talk radio and those churches that still take scriptures seriously, to hear a philosophical or science based argument against gay marriage?

No one is carrying the social conservative banner.

Why wouldn't we expect American to regurgitate the only side of the argument they've been exposed to?

This is NOT an excuse to try to be more liberal than the liberals.

You will lose every time and the country will die faster.
