Theres been a lot of discussion about same sex marriage over the last few months particularly from the candidates running for the GOP nomination. Sometimes it seems as if they are in a contest to see who can be the most stalwart defender of traditional marriage who can most effectively stoke the unfounded fears of the far right.
When talking about same sex marriage, these candidates regularly throw around phrases like religious freedom and religious liberty, warn that marriage equality will lead to the criminalization of Christianity or the downfall of the American family, and fret that our nations very future is at risk.
Lets be clear. The fight over marriage equality isnt about religious freedom or the criminalization of Christianity. States have regularly taken action to enact civil marriage with clear exemptions and protections for churches, synagogues and other religious entities. No matter what happens with same-sex marriage, that will not change.
It is also no longer a fight about our countrys future because that fight is already over. According to a recent CNN/ORC survey, the highest percentage of Americans ever, 63%, support the freedom to marry as a constitutional right for gay couples. This is an increase of 14% since 2010 and shows significant gains across all party lines. Regardless of what the U.S. Supreme Court decides this term, the American Public is already on the side of marriage equality. Should the Court oppose the expansion of the freedom to marry to all fifty states, millions of Americans will be disappointed, but progress will continue to be made. It will just take a bit longer.
What is up for discussion and debate however, is where the Republican Party goes from here

Hasn’t the GOP-e embraced the destruction of the Constitution for long enough . . . ?
How about no?
Mary, Mary... quite contrary. It isn’t marriage marriage. It gets an asterisk in my record book. Why pretend otherwise?
That's next week. Right now, all you (and your kids) have to do is celebrate sodomy with us.
When you, by law, require that the word “cat” be used to describe any furry four legged domestic animal,
the word “cat” no longer has any meaning,
and you then have mo word that means cat.
Interestingly enough, it also appears time for REAL CONSERVATIVES (tm) to leave the GOP far, far behind. Or, we can stay with the GOP, and kneel and accept the chains. The GOP is dead. It is NO BETTER than the leftists. Anyone who remains a member of the GOP and votes for GOP candidates is part of the problem, and should be ridiculed and impuned for their severe lack of intelligence.
Under the law, maybe but, under social contract I am not forced to accept ambiguity.
WTF, am I suppose to guess someone’s status or they have to announce it.
So, tolerance is now gone and all-out “embracing” is the mandate.
So called “marriage” equality is nothing more than the practice of paganism.
I'm so tired of this red herring. More like some pilpul survey purports that "Americans" are open to the hypothetical notion of phag marriage. I don't believe them and I don't believe her. I will never support the degeneration of marriage or the sacrifice of principle on the alter of political correctness.
Is she the homo Cheney?
I will never ever vote for a candidate who supports homo marriage. Never never never never never.....even it that means I vote for no one.
The one on the left appears male. Is the one on the right Mary Cheney?
Oh, yes it is. Tenants of the Christian faith and the adherents will be illegal if/when they have their way. Who is she trying to fool?
Yes. She has done enough damage. No more.
The narcissism of homosexuality: because she’s gay, the whole world must follow her dictates.
A real winning strategy.
IDIOTS.
“Marriage equality” - the new term?
Jesus, Mary & Joesph.
Save us from these homosexuals and lesbians.
Marriage: ONE MAN, ONE WOMAN.
