Russian police Saturday detained several gay rights activists for attempting to stage an unauthorised pride rally in central Moscow, AFP journalists reported.
Police officers seized the activists - one of whom tried to unfurl a rainbow flag - and loaded them into waiting vans as around 30 nationalist counter-demonstrators in camouflage hurled eggs at the activists and attacked them.
Several of the Orthodox counter-demonstrators were also detained by police as a large crowd of Russian and international journalists looked on.
"Arrested and beaten at 10th Moscow Pride. We are arrested! They probably broke my left hand finger," leading gay rights activist Nikolai Alexeyev wrote on Twitter, posting a photo of himself in detention.
"The most brutal arrest at Moscow Pride ever!"
Gay rights activists insisted on holding the event Saturday despite a court in Moscow banning it.

I trust our State Department will intervene, possibly with nuclear weapons.
If only US authorities had arrested anyone protesting for gay rights when it all started. The only rights should be the right of privacy....and that means keeping private stuff private.
Commie Cops Quell Queers.
I don’t support gratuitous violence, but I am glad the Russians are not putting up with the attempted subversion of their culture and society. And say what one will about the cozy political relationship between church and state in Russia, the ROC is 100% solid in confronting the spiritual/moral crisis threatening Western Civilization. I don’t see any other significant religious bodies taking this kind of stand.
God bless them!

Putin was alleging this week that the FIFA investigation-prosecutions by the Obama Justice Department was an attempt to take World Cup soccer away from Russia in 2018.
There was a big fight to seize control of the world soccer organization from its current president this week that followed the arrests-allegations over corruption with EU political leaders pushing for new leadership.
There’s big pro-gay corporate money in big sports and I don’t think they want to promote a World Cup in Putin’s Russia.
It will be interesting to see what transpires in the months ahead.
