NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Ed Gilligan, the president of American Express, has died.
He was 55 years old.
Gilligan died after becoming ill on a flight from Japan to New York.
Gilligan was named the companys president two years ago and joined American Express in 1980 while still a student at New York University, according to the Wall Street Journal.
He was widely considered a possible successor to CEO Ken Chenault, WSJ reported.
Chenault made the announcement via a letter to Amex employees Friday:
With the heaviest of hearts, I must share some devastating news. Ed Gilligan President of our company and friend and inspiration to many inside and outside American Express became seriously ill on a flight home to New York this morning and has passed away.
This is deeply painful and frankly unimaginable for all of us who had the great fortune to work with Ed, and benefit from his insights, leadership and enthusiasm. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Lisa, and their four children Katie, Meaghan, Kevin and Shane. He was a proud husband and father, and his love for his family was evident in all that he did.

What is the purported reason for all the dead bankers?
They know what’s about to happen this fall, and they know who is responsible. When the investigations begin, they don’t want anybody who knows to be in the position to snitch.
I think it’s because they know too much.
BTW: I just heard of this on Tom Woods’s podcast:

Just in case you harbored any doubts that we are in a depression, and it’s getting deeper.
He probably should never have left home......
Could be a heart aneurism. A lot of people go this way which are reported as merely as “heart attacks”. The pressurization of the cabin could be contributory too. Good medical care, followed closely, might have prevented it.
However, the cause is merely speculation on my part. But the odds are better, IMHO, than his being taken out.
He had the Fugu,,,?
Dude, you have a lot of reading to catch-up on.
That's as far as I got ... the Hellywood imagery posed a neat conspiracy
It was a corporate jet so bad food is probably out as a cause. The Japanese articles I have seen mention complaints of illness on the flight and an attempted emergency landing that was ultimately unsuccessful. RIP.
